For November NAC, 50s music theme.

Writing this little piece is sure difficult. I never wrote stuff like this before. The chord progressions are what get me the most. I listened to a lot of Tom and Jerry OST to get some idea for this.

I choose D major because I think it's a happy chord. Even though, I thought about Bb minor, but it not that attractive... :/

Symphonic Orchestra, tracked in Renoise.

NAC Judging
The harp is a solid start for that kind of music. But as the song went it, it got overcrowded and kinda chaotic. It picked back up later with the clarinet (I think) melody. Overall it was pretty cool and fitting with the contest's theme.

This song is definitely on my latest fix-list. Thanks for the input a lot :)

tbh this sound sounds more like something in the backing of a disney film or pbseducational claymation show or whatnot.. not so much 50s shopping malls lolol.. which happens to be a bit pluckier and happier and cheesier..

still an interesting piece nonetheless.

Thanks man. :) First time I wrote stuff like this. Nonetheless, it's still very interesting. Thanks for making the contest!

A nice, lighthearted theme. I enjoyed listening.

Because I like to include at least a little constructive criticism in my reviews, I might suggest looking at the brass parts that start around 0:36. They're not quite sitting in the chord structure and it's creating some mild dissonance. That being said, I like dissonance - I'm just wondering whether it was intentional dissonance or not. Either way, still a good entry, for sure.

Good luck, bud!

dem0lecule responds:

Thanks for the advices a lot. Yeah the brass is out of place. And I really tried you make some dissonance.

Nice start but I think that things can be better like in your December song. I think there are a few mistakes and all sounds together sounds like detune, part at 0:40

dem0lecule responds:

x.x that's what happens when I try to be complex on something I had never done previously. It will take me a while to get to same level of Snowflake arrangement with this style.

Thanks for your input. :) I'll see what I can do tonight.

Pretty neat in it's places, it gets the vibe more or less right, but most of the time it's too complicated for it's own good. The numerous voices don't really interact well, and mostly subtract from eachother. A simple melody + accompaniment texture (for example melody + bass + backbeat in the middle registers) is more than sufficient. If you're going for a 50's vibe, I'd recommend longer but relatively simple progressions, as you mostly have something of a short, harmonic ostinato going in most places now. That, together with some well-placed cromaticism goes a long way in getting that retro feel.

Well, hope that was somewhat helpful, kudos on going out of your comfort zone!
