Labbaik

Co-composed with my good friend, Josh Gawaldo.

Bass solo/vocals were me, as well as the original melodic/chordal theme. Josh is on guitar and did the mixing/mastering. We both developed the structure.

Also, I should note: Labbaik is an Arabic word meaning "We are here" that is used as a war cry for a regiment in the Pakistani army. We wanted a title that reflected the song well.

Now that NGADM is over and the judges are finally done with complaining about my songs, I was looking forward to writing tons of scathing reviews on your guys' songs, so that I could FINALLY HAVE MY REVENGE!! But instead I found this amazing song which is practically perfect. Way to ruin my fun, you JERK.

No but really this piece is amazing. Those brass blasts are just so tasty. My only complaint is that repetitive string melody that plays on top of them. I also love that soaring vocal and the decidedly arabic feel of the melodies, which works without feeling cliche.

And at electric guitar too... just really well done all around.

JUDGEMENT ALL AROUND!

Thanks for the kind review johnfn. I'd probably do this a little differently now if we were to compose it today, and change some of our generic approaches. We wrote this nearly three years ago now that I think about it... man! Time flies.

really great tone in that bass. do you play french or german bow? also what are you recording with, whatever it was really picked up the depth of that instrument extremely well. I could totally see this in a movie that takes place in the desert. really great man!!

bassfiddlejones responds:

Thanks! I use a german style bow, I find it allows me to be more aggressive while still maintaining a level of finesse. I think that when we recorded this we had a Shure, maybe a KSM of some sort? My friend has since upgraded to a Neumann. At any rate, glad you liked the piece man!

Just another comment with words

bassfiddlejones responds:

Words response words words

This was too good! The way the music blended together and gave it a great feel of both Old-Arabic and Modern-Western, is fascinating.
Oh and Labbaik actually means 'I am coming' or 'I respond to your request/pledge', It's one of those ancient words that are only used between Muslims during prayer. :)
This was powerful enough for me to actually download it, so erm... Can't wait for more.

bassfiddlejones responds:

Hey, thank you! Glad you liked it :) Hopefully there will be more on the way soon!

This was a fine piece of olden arab melody and metal novelty. A profound deficiency: no lyrics, just arabesques.

bassfiddlejones responds:

Thank you for the review, I'm glad you enjoyed it! This wasn't meant to be a lyrical piece - all of the vocals were actually a complete afterthought that we felt fit in well with the piece.
