Coed & Kynan - Happy When You're High

Climb off your ride
And close your eyes
You seem 'much better than yourself'
You seem so happy when you're high

Ahhh...

This is probably my favourite song by you, or even anyone, on newgrounds. I just love the lyrics and the way you made each verse different even though it's the same chords and lyrics.
I was also, just wondering exactly how you made everything go quiet when the bass drum is hit.
But anyways, love this song, and love you for making it.

mmFOOD responds:

Thank you so much!! :)

It's actually a collaboration I did with a friend of mine. That effect can be made through sidechaining which is a form of compression. Are you talking about how we cut the synths when the kick drum starts? If so, that's something called automation. It's basically programming instruments to do certain things at specific cues and is really common when it comes to recording music.

Although in this song we didn't use much sidechaining but did use lots of automation. Also, it's the way we mixed the song together that gave it that effect. :)

Good luck friend!

I can see how people might say the vocals for the track are overly digitized, but I think that's what makes this song so catchy and intriguing. Normally I hate that kind of effect on vocals, but it's usually because the people who use it don't do it very well, whereas you've used it very well. I easily count this song among some of the best I've heard on NG, and certainly one of the most original.

mmFOOD responds:

The song was a collective effort and I think it is what it is because of several different perspectives and ideas coming together to create a "final" product. I'm really happy with the sound and I'm even happier that you enjoy it! :) I think as an artist I'm still at a very amateur level but I want to continue to grow and I really, really appreciate the input.

I will give a lot of credit to my partner because he did a great job at mixing the song and I feel it's an underrated art and it should be highlighted that many artists may not sound as good as they should if it wasn't for their engineers sweating out some hard hours.

Thanks for the input! :)

All right, first things first, this song has a wicked groove, man! However, I would also say that the vocals might be a little too overly effected with digital sounds. It was sort of like listening to ocean waves crash onto the shoreline, and was quite difficult to decipher at times. We will be back to listen to more of your submissions.

Truly appreciate the input! I totally see where you're coming from. We intentionally intended it to sound like "crashing waves," almost a dream-like feel to it but giving it another listen I'd have to agree it sounds a bit saturated. Let's see if we can take another shot at it and play with it a little to get a much more limpid sound from the vocals. :)

I'd still like to toy around with it and get a lucid, dream-like feel from the vocals. We'll see.

This is just a raw demo for now.

It's not bad, just not my style. I don't get high all that often, but even if I was this isn't what I'd like to listen to. But I know work went into this and some people probably would enjoy it.

mmFOOD responds:

I don't get high either. I actually hate getting high although I'm not against it either. This is my way to hopefully reach out to someone...
