I used Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde as an inspiration for this and its companion (part 2) for background music for a forest or jungle scene. My intention was to convey the feeling of isolation in a big wilderness as well as despair and a subtle touch of fear.

Nice, definitely conveys that sense of isolation and despair you were going for! I really like the flute at 01:19, very mystical and desoate.

Some things I reacted on:

The mix felt a bit odd, the woodblocks sound very "in your face" while the rest of the intstrument have a lot of reverb on them. The orchestration is very nicely varied, but the more majestic sections I felt called for more middle register, though it's perhaps a mixing problem as well. The track could have really used some humanization of the MIDI - some randomness to the velocity, expression/aftertouch at the very least on wind instruments etc, either through hand-editing or a keyboard.

love the track!
I would be very interested in using it for background music in a youtube video if you wouldn't mind :) If that's ok please reply and tell me how you would like to be credited in the video, and if there are any sites that you would like me to link.
Thanks.

I sent you pm, but in case you missed it. Yes you may use my piece in any non-commercial project. You can credit me as jpops. A link back to my NG page would be nice, but not necessary. When you post your video, I'd like a link so I can see how it was used.

Thanks, and good luck on your project.

Intriguing, yet Beautiful

If it was your intention to make this seem like a forest or a jungle scene, you DEFINITELY hit the mark. As I listened to this, I imagined myself all stranded on an island, yet.. I sense someone near me just.. observing.
I can't shake the feeling, and I keep on running; glancing over my shoulder now and then.
Only certain pieces have made me feel like this.
Good job.

Thank you very much. Your review is very descriptive, I appreciate that. Kudos for catching that feeling of dread, I was going for that, but in a subtle way. Thanks again for your review.
