"The minimalism really carries over."

by: Mataro
date: February 21, 2008

I wouldn't call it techno, really. But I'm not sure what I would really call it. Almost.. Ambient? Heh, almost. There's really not much for me to say here.. It all sounds pretty cool. The effects were a nice touch.. But it all feels pretty plain. A little underdone, if you understand what I mean. Took far, far too long for some percussion to come in. But the choir there is brilliant. Sounds awesome. The last minute or so of the song is by far the best part.. But even then it feels like it's on the brink of busting out, but it never quite makes it.. That saw-ish pluck is pretty awesome, by the by.

What it really feels like though, is that it could have been great, but the amount of time you spent building it, fading back out, really killed off the momentum. The bomb siren was bloody brilliant. But in the chaos thereafter, like bombs striking the earth, should have been some booming percussion, some powerful bass, and a chaotic, distorted synthline just to usher in the impending doom that the piece seems to convey.

I prefer it more when heralds actually herald something, if you know what I mean. Regardless, it's solid. It's just not spectacular. Good job nonetheless. 7/10, 4/5. Keep it up, and thanks for your criticism on -=Gallows=-! :D

Author's Response:

Thanks for a wicked review man. I started writing this piece with the ambition to carry it on to more of a tune. When I first submitted this, it was only allowed to be a certain length of time... I think under 4 minutes, so I left it as it was. I may have to go over it and release a version 2 where it gets a bit heavier.

Thanks very much for the review and rating. Good criticisms and very fair.

Cheers, James

Author's Response:

Thanks for the review, but the only reason I have loads more downloads than listens is that I submitted this a while ago, and when the new layout came to newgrounds, it carried the download amount but not the listen amount. So I have a bigger download amount than listen. I don't download my own stuff.. why should I? I already have it.

Thanks for the review though, I'm pleased you enjoyed it.

"Interesting"

date: August 25, 2007

The intro is very interesting, and made me want to listen to the rest of the piece. However, more variations would be nice, overall well done.

"hey nice job"

date: August 25, 2007

sweet song normaly im not for the intros but this was great and really helped to build the music. but i have a question how come theres only like 15 listens but 77 downloads

August 25, 2007

Author's Response:

Thanks for your review NAMEOFUSER. I was wondering the same thing... I think its because i submitted this a while ago it was downloaded around 77 times but when the new newgrounds layout came in to play it only carried with it the download amount. I could be wrong though.

Cheers, James

"Reviewing as I listen"

date: March 23, 2006

The first thing I noticed was, "whoa, getting louder." Stupid, I know, but it's me we're talking about.

I don't usually hear techno like this (or at least the beginning. Haven't heard the whole thing yet). It's a diverse pleasure.

The "beeping" noise that sounds like some kind of...I don't know...machine...yeah, that's cool. The sirens too.

Wow it's loud. And then that subtle drum beat. That's cool.

The song doesn't really change much. It generally stays the same volume and there's no variation in beat. It's a great song and really creates and atmosphere, but I feel if there was MORE, you know, *MORE*, it would be better. Some parts where it's faster, or some really loud parts with insane rhythms...I don't know.

Great job.

Author's Response:

Wicked review man. I can't remember but I think its this song a few people have said add a hi-hat something or other so I recon that may thicken it out a bit and give it a bit of variation. I kind of went for a progressive, minimalist piece here, but I think I maybe went a little too minimaist, lol. Thanks for the review man,

James
