Before I start yapping about the song, I'd like to thank Buoy for being a massive help and giving me loads of tips or pointers while this track was still under development - also this song is inspired from some of his music too. Thanks to Echo and a few school friends of mine for providing some criticism too!

Now, to start with, I'm proud of this submission. I haven't made music in a long while, but somehow, despite the insane amount of college work I'm getting combined with hosting the NGADM competition, I managed to find the time to make this. I thought of the melody many many months ago on the piano, and somehow it stuck in my head. I reasoned that if a melody was locked inside my head for so long, then it must be somewhat decent, and forced myself to turn it into a song eventually.

As for resources, this was made using FL Studio 10, with East/West for the legato flute, strings, piano, brass and cymbal roll. Some of the percussion along with a certain brass hit was taken from Vengeance Essential House. The rest is all freeware: I used a soundfont called BassFing for the bass, a free Kontakt 4 guitar library along with FreeAmp, Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra free soundfonts for the staccato flute and some of the bongos, and then random drum samples from here: (http://www.darkbeats.com /sampleswap/) for a lot of the percussion. This has over 100 patterns, and it's one of my longest recent songs.

The theme of this song is pretty hard to define. Personally I kinda thought this song would represent a traveler entering a mysterious new world and discovering the odd/quirky traditions of its inhabitants. In light of that I tried to add loads of different moods and styles in the song - you'll be hearing adventurous, tribal, uplifting and at some points even jazz-like sections. My friends think this song reminds them of guys with afros in the 70's walking in slow motion, meh.

Thanks for listening, and as always feedback is greatly appreciated!

EDIT: Fixed a lot of stuff that reviewers mentioned. I used the cymbal roll less (and used a gong in certain parts), turned the volume down to reduce clipping (hopefully), added some more elements in the part at 2:24, made the descending guitar run right before the piano solo a bit louder, and did some random stuff like change a note in the legato flute part, vary the drums a bit more, etc...

Hope it sounds better!

whoops

I wrote a whole response to your last PM, but according to my sentbox I never sent it. The only really important thing is that your tune is clipping. I'm giving you a 10 because I trust that you will fix that and upload a non-clipping version. If you don't, I'll take one star hostage in any reviews you're getting from me in the future

Anyway. I don't really have a whole lot more to add anymore. Good song. Song is good.

Ouch, it is? Oops.

I'll see what I can do when I'm done from some NGADM stuff. Thanks for the 10, and fear not, SBB's future review scores, I will not let you guys be taken hostage :3.

Thanks for all your help, man.

Excellent !!!

FL Studio is showing off its orchestral capabilities more and more, I use Fl Studio also myself.
(backtoreviewCough...)
Anyhow I couldn't spot anything wrong after listening to the song 5 times in a row. Its just that good. If the perfect vocals could be inserted I wouldn't be less amazed if some good female vocals in a jazz style 70-80's could somehow blend into the song HA!
With over a 100 patterns you must have a Great System...^_^
Blah I'm rambling all over the place in this review anyhow GREAT JOB.

Thanks a million for reviewing!

"FL Studio is showing off its orchestral capabilities more and more, I use Fl Studio also myself.

Oh yeah, I don't get why so many people think FL Studio can't make orchestral. I've been making orchestral for months with FL Studio. I admit it's not the best (Cubase and Sonar are probably better) but it's not as bad as people make it look like.

"Anyhow I couldn't spot anything wrong after listening to the song 5 times in a row. Its just that good."

Haha, thank you. I, on the other hand, can mention plenty of things that are wrong with it, but I don't have the musical capability to fix them :3.

"If the perfect vocals could be inserted I wouldn't be less amazed if some good female vocals in a jazz style 70-80's could somehow blend into the song HA!"

DAMMIT, what is this 70's vibe that everyone speaks of? I'm not hearing it, haha.

"With over a 100 patterns you must have a Great System...^_^"

Well, a large amount of patterns won't hog too much CPU I think. It's when loads of patterns (instruments) play together that the CPU hogging starts. But I have some pretty decent specs, yeah. Total opposite of my (now dead) old computer. That thing was a dinosaur.

"Blah I'm rambling all over the place in this review anyhow GREAT JOB"

Thanks again for the great review. I appreciate it a lot!

Hey Steph!

This one is simply awesome, as usual, I simply love your songs, they have an epic feeling, and a great ambient, I loved the song's progress, the tunes are awesome, the beggining has a dark/underground sound, and I like the way you built the tune up, with that amazing piano tune, adding the violins (it sounds like a violin, correct me if I'm wrong. xD), and in the end, everything sounds great, all those instruments fit really well in the main melody.

You know I'm a big fan of your music, it's really awesome to listen to something like this song, it made me chill, it has a perfect atmosphere, I imagined a lot of different things while listening to this song... I guess you accomplished what you wanted, as always.

Keep up with the awesome work Steph, I expect more awesome and epic songs from you, and sorry for the bad and late review, it's been a long time since my last review, I completely forgot all I've learned in the RRC, lol.

Glad you liked all that! Melodies and atmosphere are definitely two things I'm proud of in this song.

"the beggining has a dark/underground sound, and I like the way you built the tune up,"

You're not the first to notice the dark sound of the intro. I did that because I find it easier to start a song in a dark/atmospheric mood. Whenever I try and start songs in a light/happy mood it always comes out really gay, haha.

"with that amazing piano tune, adding the violins (it sounds like a violin, correct me if I'm wrong. xD), and in the end, everything sounds great, all those instruments fit really well in the main melody."

Great! Yeah, after the piano there's a violin, along with a viola, a legato cello and a more subtle cello/double bass in the background :3.

I haven't been making music as often as I used to, unfortunately. It might be because of college, but I think it's because a few years ago when I used to begin making a song, I'd make it whether it sounds nice or not so nice, and submit it anyway. Now my standards are a bit higher and I find it harder and harder to start decent songs.

Although yeah, I'll try not to disappoint :3.

"and sorry for the bad and late review, it's been a long time since my last review, I completely forgot all I've learned in the RRC, lol."

Nah man this review was awesome! Thanks a lot for stopping by, I'm very glad you liked the song!

Awesome song!

I really like this tune, mate. Everything sounded crystal clear, and the melodies are memorable. I particularly like the snare you used. Could you tell me where I can get good snare samples like that one? I would like to use it for my techno project I am working on right now.

My only critique for this song right now is that after the second chorus part, it felt like it dreaded on for a while. I wanted something else to happen, but nothing new came in.

Overall, I thought this was a pretty solid track. You rarely find pop songs like these nowadays. Keep up the good work, bro.

Could you please review me back on my first submission? I would appreciate the feedback. :)

Hey, thanks for the helpful review!

"I really like this tune, mate. Everything sounded crystal clear, and the melodies are memorable."

Good to hear! I'm quite proud of the melodies in this song, I think they're some of my best.

"I particularly like the snare you used. Could you tell me where I can get good snare samples like that one? I would like to use it for my techno project I am working on right now."

Of course. Here - http://www.darkbeats.com/sampleswap/ - is the source of a lot of my drum samples. They're all free, and while they're not exactly professional quality, there are so many drum samples in there that you're bound to find tonnes of hidden gems.

You're not the first to like the snare I used here (someone else said it sounds great when I used it in another song of mine, Town Theme). This one in particular is from the 5000_DRUMHITS.rar library (specifically in this filepath: SAMPLES - 5000 DRUMHITS > ACCOUSTI > AMBIENTS). If you want me to send you the snare sample on its own, just drop me a line!

"My only critique for this song right now is that after the second chorus part, it felt like it dreaded on for a while. I wanted something else to happen, but nothing new came in."

Haha I have a bit of a problem with that. Once I reach like the second chorus of a song or finish a long section of a song, I start feeling the urge to finish the track as quick as I can so I can submit it here :P. I often end up rushing the last sections of a song. Perhaps that's why you thought it got a bit boring towards the end. Although I do like the tribal-like part right after the second chorus, personally.

"Overall, I thought this was a pretty solid track. You rarely find pop songs like these nowadays. Keep up the good work, bro."

Thanks a million, I'll try!

"Could you please review me back on my first submission? I would appreciate the feedback. :)"

I'd love to. I'm really busy right now reviewing for a competition I'm hosting along with loads of Maths homework so I might take a long while to review I'm afraid, but I'll add it to my to-do list :3.

Thanks again!
