Smooth

I really like what you've done here with the constantly shifting jazz chromatics. The choices for instruments are spot on, and the entire piece stays fresh and interesting all the way through. Good job with this one, jazz is one of my weak genres to compose in.

Not much to criticize about this one. The only thing that immediately stands out to me is a rather long fade-out at the end. Maybe shorten the fade, or wrap it up with a little riff or something.

Nice job, keep up the good work!

I'm glad you liked the progression, it's the part I've put the most effort on.

As for the fade-out, well, I guess it's all a matter of aesthetic choice, and that's entirely personnal, so to each his opinion, I guess.

Thanks again for the review, I'm glad you enjoyed!

Modulations

Woah. these chord progressions are pretty weird, but they sure do sound cool.i especially like the melody, because it has a very jazzy feel to it,and at the end of the main melody,i like the nice cadenza. i don't really remember what the name of it was,but i think it's either Deceptive Cadence or N.A. Cadence. either way,i like this for sure, because of the calm and smoothness this section of the waltz has. i cant wait to hear the whole thing,if you're going to upload it to newgrounds.

now, there are a few little things i dont like. one of them is the drum beat and set that you used. 1) it sounds too resonant, and 2) you like to use the crash cymbal alot, which kind of kills the chill mood. also, the last chord the piano plays feels out of place alongside the chord progression.

overall,i like this piece, but the few things that are holding it back are simple things that you can easily change,if you get what im trying to get at.

Hey Nimble, glad you enjoyed the song, and thanks for the review!

If you're instrested in the chord progression, it's Fma7-Abma9-Gm11-Gb6/9. It's a jazz substitution cadenza, because jazz often substitutes certain chords for it's secondairy dominants, a tritone above. My progression, without the substitution, would then be F-D-G-C, or I-VI-ii-V, also called a rythme-change progression.

The B section is just a I-ii-V-IV with a modulation at the end, progression I litteraly pulled out o' my arse, so not that much of a big deal. Glad you liked, though.

As afformentioned, Reason sucks at presenting you good samples, and sucks much more at letting you get the ones you want, so I'm kind of stuck with those sucky samples, hence the sound quality... Most of the crashe cymbales you hear are actually supposed to be splashs and whatnot, but it would seem the only cymbales Propellerhead HQ are aware of are crashs... and more crashs.

Thanks for the tips, I'm taking note! Also, thanks again for the review, glad you enjoyed!

Amazing composition

This is what I like to hear when it comes to jazz. It's not groundbreaking, but it mixes it up and it has something somewhat new to offer.

The composition is great, it has a proper built up track with nice transitions. Though the drum samples aren't the best, that really doesn't matter too much. The melody is really great, and I do like the rhythmics. A nice intro that builds up to the track properly, but I don't like that the outro is fade-out.

Maybe do some more work with dynamics, I heard some, but not a lot.

I'm glad you enjoyed, and BTW, I know my drum samples suck arse, it plagues me, and there isn't much I can do about it, since Reason doesn't allow VST's...

Also, I felt the progression was quite appropriate to end in fade-out, though mybe that was laziness, lol.

Again, really glad you enjoyed, and thanks again for the review!

Relaxing

Kind of makes me think of some parts of Final Fantasy VIII as well. Really soft and calming piece of jazz though, sounds nice.

The piano is really nice and has a sweet sounding melody to it too. The drums are calming and sound incredible as well to me. They kind of brighten up the mood a bit. The bass line is very simple and brings relaxation to the whole tune. It sounds incredibly easing on the ears too.

Overall, has a very nice and soft tone to it that makes you feel good about life. Nice work.

Again with the FF? I should really play those games, given the almost integrity of my music sounds like it...

Very relaxing.

And very well-made. I honestly can't find a complaint to throw against it. This is VERY good. Please continue this! I'll list exactly what I like and hope for in the final, 10 minute version.

1: I love the fact that this is actually organized, the outro is similar to the intro, the main part of the song is formatted in ABA (I believe), and the whole thing has a "groove" to it. I hope the whole 10-minute gig will be formatted as well, in a large ABA, instead of having five-six segments that are transitioned, but not formatted.
2: The instruments. They blend together quite well, and just "fit". I don't see any problem with the piano, the instruments all seem pretty realistic.
3: The drums. My only small problem is (yeah, I found something I don't like. :P) that it's not very constant-sounding. It seems to be more random than steady, I know it's a loop, but... still sounds odd and not very consistent. I do think that you have an interesting style with them though, so take this or leave it, it won't ruin the song in any way, in my opinion.

Overall, wonderful work!

Thanks for the great review, one week early furthermore!

Yeah, the song's structured, though I wouldn't classify it in A's and B's, that reffers to the melody line, in this case, I'd put it more A-chorus-B-chorus.

The whole song will be multiple themes, but with a connecting line, and a recurent theme, so it isn't just a bunch of songs mashed together, while not always being one really long developement of a single theme.

The drum parts are, in fact, NOT loops, rather grooves that I wrote myself. It's just impossible to write down a realistic drum part, so I wrote down a few patterns and added a few fills. The drums are actually not enough diversed for my taste...

Thanks again, I'm glad you enjoyed it that much, it proves I'm doing something right here!

Cheers
