NGHH'11 - Sample Battle

This is my sample battle submission. First let me say the sample pack was a big surprise this year. Sufjan Stevens in the pack?! Awesome. Good deal Red.

Now gather 'round children, I'm gonna break down what I did.

The tempo is 95 bpm.

The intro is Yann Tiersen - Dust Lane reversed. I added reverb, some delay, and heavy phasing to the chops.

I chopped the drums from John Zorn - Larkspur. Each chop got it's own track so I could eq each kick, hat, and snare. The pitch of the snare was dropped about an octave to give it a 'dusty' 'grainy' sound.

For the bassline, I took the guitar from Sufjan Stevens - They Are Night Zombies. I chopped and rearranged it. I also doubled the track and filtered off the high end to emphasize the bass on the second 'backup' track.

I used the piano from the same Sufjan song, it pops up a few times through the beat.

For more oomph, you know, when the drumtrack gets kicked into overdrive (about 1 minute in), I chopped up the kicks and snare from Mother Mother - Body of Years.

The synth-like up down thingy that comes in around 1:10 is John Zorn - Pacifica sped up and chopped. I added a resonance filter to muffle it and give it the snthy sound. This can be heard again at 2:30 when the bass goes away.

The other snyth-like thing that comes in at 1:20 is Antibalas - I.C.E.. It also has a resonance filter and then a LFO. The pitch was changed too.

At 2:51 the sample used in the intro is used again. But at 3:01 the sample is reversed back to it's original playback and eq'd to emphasize the high-end, like a transistor radio. From there the two sample chops alternate between bars and the outro is just more Yann Tiersen - Dust Lane reversed and stretched out.

The drums during the outro just have heavy delay and reverb, they are the same drum chops from before.

Uh, that's about it.

GunstarGreene responds:

That is probably my favorite part of the track, I tried doing more with it but i think it fell in nicely. Thanks for the feedback, good luck next round.

Really loved what you did with those samples, man.

You did a great job on this, my dude! You really kicked ass with those drums!

GunstarGreene responds:

Thanks for the feedback dude.

This piece............

Has inspired me to enter the sample competition myself. It'll be done by the deadline. Super funky, catchy, and had my head bobbing throughout. Great job!
