Hey guys! So this is a simple melody i wrote today while i was studying the cello for 2 hours.

For the record, i have only been playing cello for about a year and a half. I know i am not good, but i want to keep track of my playing. I also want to do this every now and than to hear a reaction from other people.

-----CELLO NOTES-------
BAD Feel extreme tension throughout all of my body, to the point that i am exhausted throughout my entire body. Huge exhaustion of the muscles in my Quads and hamstrings. The muscles on my right hand between the thumb and index finger. Huge strain on my right bicep and shoulder and neck. Even though back is not slouched, i feel strain in the lower back. I am just extremely exhausted. I felt this in Cello Study 4 as well, when i filmed myself playing cello on the camcorder. Next session i want to try and turn off the internet as well, or any form of technology. It is possible that i am distracted. I played for about 2 hours in this session, however my mind was rushing a lot towards the end, just trying to get the idea out. However, i should never study this way, otherwise i am losing good habits.

Also there are sometimes pitch problems in this song. I need more work on my bowing, and accuracy of the bowing, for sometimes i hit other strings. I should not only be composing the melody, but composing the bowing and fingering as well.

GOOD I recognize these problems, but i so desperately want to create the sound thats in my head that i am willing to sacrifice for tension. I will let it pass for this recording, but from now on i want to find a simple melody, or some exercise that i can stick to, so that i can focus on perfecting my playing on the Cello. The cello is not like the piano, in the sense that it requires magnificent attention to detail. It should be learned slowly, carefully, and accurately. My creative and compositional side is getting to me, and trying to just create whats in my head, but i must be patient.

WHAT TO DO NEXT PRACTICE
1. Go through 1 or 2 sessions of the online Cello tutorials on youtube tomorrow, and practice each lesson for a total of 30-40min per tutorial video. That way i can learn the different practice techniques.
2. Its fun to compose on the cello, but do not improvise only. If i am to compose, i must master what i am playing so that i do not lose my good habits.
3. Begin looking for a cello teacher for a single lesson to help with fixing these bad habits.

Thoughts

I like the melody of this piece but there's several things that are a bit off.
The most drastic and offset if the mismatching of the harmony. I haven't learned enough music theory to tell you exactly what it is thats messing it up but its like your not even quite hitting the notes, your hitting like odd semitones. And that bass harmony you've got going is slightly off too i think.

Another big thing is the portamento you have between the notes. Its awkward timing and makes it sound out of tune during each switch. Try to reduce the time it takes to switch notes, and don't play while your switching. Basically just enunciating each note. If your going for the legato, you need to make sure that its a steady slide.

The last thing is just your rhythm. Make sure you play with a metronome. Its not drastic but you fall away from the beat a few times. It's especially noticeable in the bass harmony.

Thanks a lot man, I am actually going to make another recording soon, once i have mastered what you have just told me. I am glad to see that people are recognizing my mistakes, and i can use that as an asset.
