Because this is my first actual attempt at percussion in a jazz piece, I really am looking for constructive criticism on it. This little chart is more of an experiment in style than much else, but nevertheless, enjoy it as a nice little song. Remember, it's more conceptual than musical.

As a side note, this is older-style jazz, not some modern-style piece. Do not compare this to piano jazz or such, for they are on different sides of the spectrum. Compare this to dixie-style jazz if anything.

-REVISED: trombone 'soli' inserted, then new ending-

T_T

The song isn't really a jazz song plus he different insturments dont fit together that well.

Instrument List:
-Trumpet
-Trombone
-Tenor Sax
-Drum Set
-Cow Bell

That looks like a stereotypical jazz band when shrunken down to a person/instrument almost to the mark (missing the guitar, bass, and piano). It's probably just the fact that I ended up using general MIDI for the sounds.

On a constructive note, do you have any suggestions as to a different set of instruments to use?

As for the genre, refer to my nice letter below. I consider your opinion as a valid point, but the simple fact is my jazz is defined differently than your jazz and no one is to blame for that, we just need to accept that fact.

Eh...

Okay... Maybe make it longer and add other, different parts to make it sound better.

I'll look over what I can add in (perhaps a solo or such) and look into extending/adding to it. As I stated, this was an experiment and was not meant to be seen as a full song, merely a test of the methods I was using with the drums.

Clearly, the test has failed.

This doesn't sound much like jazz

--Production--
Yeah, not exactly produced well, but it's alriiiiight I guess. The horns are killin me.

--Listenability--
As I said... the horns is killin meh xD But apart from that, the drums sound alright. Just maybe try to make them more 'jazzy' with stuff such as rides and stuff.

--Genius--
Because this isn't jazz! This is marching band stuff! I mean what the froth? :P

--Flair--
Nah but it's nice. It's good marching music.

--Tilt--
Just try to listen to some jazz music and emulate what they're trying to do. Because jazz is more complex than most types of music. It has less conspicuous chord progressions and less 'driven' beats. Something along those lines. Thx for lettin me listen.

--Production-- = 6/10
--Listenability-- = 4/10
--Genius-- = 6/10
--Flair-- = 4/10
--Tilt-- = 2/10
Overall score = 4.4/10
Rounded Score = 4/10

Verdict: Needs improvement!

Thanks for the constructive feedback. :)

First off, just to clarify, the piece is pretty darn close to a dixie sort-of feel. I like early jazz, so if you are a latin and 'fancy night club' sort-of guy, the song isn't for you in the first place. ;)

I would call it a lot closer to jazz when compared to my other compositions (although not as close as my recordings).

Second, i'm sorry that I had to stick it out with General MIDI for this... I decided to fall back on my old favorite program.

The closest group to a marching band that would play this would be a high-school marching band that performs at rallies, football games, and KFC openings... I could not in a million years see a 'pomp-and-ludicrous' marching band play this sort of thing (what I mean is, the sort of groups that play patriotic music tend to not play stuff like this at the same time under the same event).

If you want, I can write up something nice and patriotic and show you what I call 'Marching Music'. It's called fifes, drums, and horn fanfares. :)

I may try to go back and work on the drums some more. As I wrote, it was my first valid attempt at putting drums to anything like that (if you took the time to look at any of my OTHER songs that are neither 'jazz' nor recordings, you would find that to be a true statement). Thanks once again for being constructive.

Oh, and by the by, I have three Vince Giordano CDs I listen to at least thrice a week on top of two compilations of Big Band recordings. I think the score was simply because everyone is used to a different form of Jazz than what I am familiar with. In addition, I play the trombone (yes, I'm a bass clef kinda guy) in a jazz ensemble.

P.S. Are you willing to review some of my other stuff then? You are one of the few people who actually gives good feedback (even if it does say that the song sucked, I don't care, as long as it gives feedback that isn't "that sucked 100% get a life").
