I'm not entirely a Linkin Park fan (mostly indifferent toward them), but by fan request (Monkeyface91) I've made my own cover to their hit song "New Divide". In this cover, I didn't try to change the style much, but rather gave my own spin on it and did things the way I thought they should be done in the song. For the most part, aside from changing the instrumentation a wee bit, I acted upon my undying hatred for the bridge to the original song (I feel it killed the goodness the song had going for it).

Also, this experience gave me a chance to give my new toys a spin (my $80 Studio mic, a new VSTi I got called "Addictive Drums" that contains realistic drumset samples, and actually getting to use Nuendo 4 to make a song after I spent damn near $1000 on it)

I had to crank the vocals up a lot more than I normally would have, lest they'd drown in the mix with the guitars and such, but I think they blend fairly well.

(Original song and lyrics by Linkin Park)
(Cover music/performance by George R. Powell (Setu Firestorm))

I remembered black skies, the lightning all around me
I remembered each flash as time began to blur
Like a startling sign that fate had finally found me
And your voice was all I heard that I get what I deserve

So give me reason to prove me wrong, to wash this memory clean
Let the floods cross the distance in your eyes
Give me reason to fill this hole, connect the space between
Let it be enough to reach the truth that lies across this new divide

There was nothing in sight but memories left abandoned
There was nowhere to hide, the ashes fell like snow
And the ground caved in between where we were standing
And your voice was all I heard that I get what I deserve

So give me reason to prove me wrong, to wash this memory clean
Let the floods cross the distance in your eyes across this new divide

In every loss, in every lie, in every truth that you'd deny
And each regret and each goodbye was a mistake too great to hide
And your voice was all I heard that I get what I deserve

So give me reason to prove me wrong, to wash this memory clean
Let the floods cross the distance in your eyes
Give me reason to fill this hole, connect the space between
Let it be enough to reach the truth that lies across this new divide
Across this new divide, across this new divide

And you did this all alone??! You have talent man!

Im not a great fan of Linkin Park but I do enjoy their music, and your cover was very faithful to the original and impressed me! The score is very underrated btw

I think if you go on professional career you will be rich man, trust me!

Im going to check other music from you now. Thanks for the cool song!

Author's Response:

Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. My main motivation for doing this cover (aside from the fact that someone asked me to do it) was the bridge in the original version - it made me want to shoot myself. They had a perfectly decent song going on and when it gets to the bridge you're like "What...? Did this song just completely derail?"

Or maybe those were just my thoughts. =p

Thanks again.

"Might be your best vocal performance yet!"

date: August 15, 2009

Your vocals actually go very well with this song. I was expecting something to be wrong with it, but it matched up pretty well.
Just make me a promise, and don't start using Auto-Tune.
The new drum sounds are noticeable, as I think a lot of your older songs had very similar sounds in them and this had something new on the platter.

This is the song they made for Transformers 2, right? Awesome song... movie was disappointing. Too long and gave me as much of a headache as Cloverfield did.

Author's Response:

Yeah, I never saw Transformers 2 either, when a friend of mine told me it sucked. I heard from other people I didn't miss much, so it never bothered me to miss it. =p

Thanks for your feedback. I actually did use Autotune, although it didn't need to correct much of anything. Believe me, having used Auto-Tune for a year, you can usually tell if it had to correct a lot, because you can hear it struggling to adjust one note to the next.

I also used my new condenser mic that I bought at Best Buy and have been waiting to use. The new drums were a VSTi I picked up recently called Addictive Drums. It's much better than using Hypersonic then spending an hour setting the drum EQs to make them sound more real and less synth.

Again, thanks for the feedback.

"Finally"

date: August 10, 2009

Finally, a Linkin Park song from you.

Beat: 9/10-It has a great beat to it, and it's a great remix of the song, even if it's a little similar at some points.
WOW factor:9/10-You did a great job with this song, and it was superb at some points.

Overall:9.5/10-Linkin Park is my favorite band, so it's great that you actually did a song from them. Hopefully you can do one of their older songs from Meteora or Hybrid Theory soon.

August 10, 2009

Author's Response:

I personally liked the two older albums better than their newest one, but that's just me.
