***EDIT 06/22/09: Minor tweaks to the song were made. I took DJOrsa's advice and turned down the hi-hat in the section he mentioned. I also turned up the distorted organ a little smidgit because I felt it was getting drowned out by the synthesizers, or other "voices," in some parts.***
This piece is a 4-part fugue for a metal operetta/prog epic I started writing over the weekend, known for now as "2012: End of Days," obviously inspired by all the hype created by the prediction that the world will come to an end in 2012, December 21 more specifically, because the ancient Mayans say so. I believe it and at the same time, I don't believe it. It may happen, it may not happen. I'm not gonna let it make me paranoid and I'm just gonna live my life.
I've been studying the composition of the fugue a lot lately and it's starting to make it's way into my composition style. My metal operetta already contains some fugal elements and I will probably be doing it a lot from now on.
This fugue will definitely be in the final production. Hopefully, the final product will be finished before the summer's over. Because it'll be 20+ min. I'll just post it in increments when it's finished. I can't remember the last time I tried pulling off something this big.
I'm posting this piece now because I think it sounds awesome already and I just wanted to let people know that some loser in this world is actually taking on such a project XD

Finally, an original fugue that doesn't suck! And a fugue that actually makes musical thought progress instead of taking you on a journey and abruptly stopping. Well done, I hope that you upload more of your operetta!

Hehe... :D thanks! I'm sorry to say that the operetta is on an indefinite hiatus and I'm not sure when it'll be finished anymore.
And I do think the whole 2012 thing is bullshit now. That Bible quote explains very well why.

i love the bass, the way the percussion progresses, and your melodies flow remarkably. definitely your best effort in a while, this is one of my fav's and i look forward to your lissning to your prog epic!

Great transitions, instrumentation, drum work... just everything. It melds together great, just one thing. At 0:26ish to 0:49 the 16th hi hat hits are kinda loud, imo. Maybe a tiny thing to look at.
Close to the real guys
This is really close to stuff i've listened to, skill and enjoyability wise. Jethro tull is the band that comes to mind from this song, because it's backing is based on unusual scales and rare chord progressions and cut into sections, 4 to say, (and Thick as a birck part 1 for example which was around 10 songs put into a straight 20 minute track).
Things to work on. The drums are very basic. I understand you arn't a drummer, but it would be good to have some more complex rythyms though. You don't have to do too much more though. For example, you have guys like the drummer from queen whos most challenging thing in his entire career was playing a song in 5/4. Just try to get a little more drumming. I'm not saying it has to sound like "The happiest days of our lives" from Pink Floyd's the wall, but it does need some more.
Hey! Haven't seen you in a while.
Anyway, I really don't want to go all out with the drums here because my intention for this piece was to put the focus on the melodies, since this is a fugue. If I started adding complex drum rhythms to this song, that would kill it. The drum beat is kinda catchy here so that's good enough.
