There you have it, the opening to one of the best RPG's ever made, Valkyrie Profile. This was done in FL Studio 8, with Edirol Orchestral as the VSTi. I hope that you'll enjoy this track. If you give this song a 0, please let me know why, so that I can improve. ^_^
The name of this song is 'To The Unhallowed Ground', which is heard in the opening sequence of Valkyrie Profile.

EDIT 7/7/2009: WOOT, Top 30! Just an FYI, there is still room for improvement on this track, for example, the brass is a bit overpowering, and I plan on fixing that up shortly.

"don't use orchestral"

date: September 1, 2009

to make your entire song - me and xbrav laid those hallowed rules out in the video game portal a couple years after it opened - its a cheat - and you are also severely limiting yourself sound-wise as to how your songs will sound. That and its sorta like running a midi thru piano exporting it and submitting it :P

this song isn't too bad - but it could be better - better sounds - better filtering - if you only use one orchestral then you're kind of limiting how much of each instrument you can really individually filter.

Dammit, once again, I forgot to edit the descrciption...
I used EWQL and Edirol on this one, but I'm still downloading more instruments to broaden my range. I think this song needs another update, anyway xD

Compared to the original, I am not sure which I like better, hehe. Possibly this one, I really have not much else to say, except great job.

I listened to the original again, comparing it to this, and they're quite similar, since the original song had great instrument quality, but the original was much faster than this. Thanks for the great review! ^_^

It's a very good rendition of "To the Unhallowed Ground," which is this theme's name.

With Setu-Firestorm. The orchestration is good and you combine slower sounds in the strings with the melody in the woodwinds to good effect. Sometimes in slower pieces the beat is lost because of legato playing that isn't set against anything rhythmic. There is always something to help the listener keep time in your piece.

In a slower piece like this, you can really drench everything in reverb (within limits, though) to cover up the synthetic nature of the samples.

I also think that Setu-Firestorm is absolutely correct in that one of the things lacking in most orchestral music on NG is dynamics. One of the things that sets apart the pros like danman87 is the use of volume and dynamics to make his parts more expressive. I have not used Edirol Orchestra but with EWQL Symphonic Orchestra there are certain patches that are set up so that volume changes with movement in the mod wheel. Using effects like that to create crescendoes and decrescendoes I think would really add to this piece.

Overall, though, your piece is very well done and uses an accessible but not contrived chord progression to get the message across.

Hey, thanks for the great review! I'm still trying to learn the odds and ends of FL Studio, but I'll be sure to update my songs as I become more experienced with the program! ^_^
