Hey people, its been a little while. Yes I am back though I will not submit as much as I used to. This is just a little something I cooked up because I was bored. Its good ol' Mario as a doctor, remember killing those Viruses? I didn't do an incredible amount to this song but meh...I like it well enough.

Oh, and yes I know it sounds like a MIDI. But like always I try to adhere to the original as much as I can. Since the original WAS a MIDI, or at least sounded like one, I thought why change something that is stuck in everyone's memory.

Good times....gooooood times.

Now Chill (hint hint)

Did a quick edit, centered the bass a bit as it seemed to dominate the left side a bit. Other then that I think I might leave it as is.

Re-submitted through the edit feature due to a mistake on my part. I uploaded the non-'mastered' version that, among other things, didn't include any reverb. Whoops my bad, should be good now.
ANYMORE PROBLEMS?!!!! gosh >< Anyhow, I hope you all enjoy this, it may not be my best, but heck...I didn't exactly spend loads of time on it either.

"As a tribute piece it works..."

date: November 25, 2009

Hello,

I remember the game, and it's annoying yet oddly catchy theme music.
I think you did a very solid remix of the music.

Various elements you've added make the track significantly more enjoyable,
so I'm going to congratulate you on making a good remix.

That said this is something I would consider cruel, and unusual torture if someone was forced to listen to. I'm sure there are a bunch of folks out there that will really dig this though, it was really well done...

On the other hand I would much prefer to be raped by Lebanese pirates...

Thanks,
- Celx

"Good remix"

by: Coop83
date: October 18, 2009

Yes, I remember this game. The remix does it justice, perhaps with something done to the parts when the tune itself seems to cut out and you get that "duh-duh" note, it always seems to run aground for me.

There are a few duff notes here and there (mostly when they are on their own), the second note of the solo starting at 40s, I think the offending note occurred at 43s, which did take away from that particular piece of the tune. When you've copied that piece for the next time around, it does show through, unfortunately.

Still, it's a good effort and this track does sound good, with some pretty good uses, as Mario games and movies are always being made here.

Author's Response:

Who doesn't remember this game. If you've played it you'll remember it. But frankly I'm surprised that so many people enjoy this one. I didn't think it was the greatest thing to ever grace my completed songs folder. But I am not sure when you say "duh-duh note." Frankly I can't seem to pick it out atm. I don't know actually, even when I go back over it and try to locate the note(s) centered around the 40s area I am still unable to pick it out. Guess my music ear just isn't as good as your own. Pity x.x.

Overall I like this well enough and I'm just happy that people seem to enjoy it as well. I may not really make anything off of..well...anything but I am happy just knowing that people enjoy them.

In the end guy I'll have to thank you, it would seem you have pointed out something I can't even hear XD. I'll have to work on that if I ever do another remix remotely like this one.

"Great Remix.."

date: October 18, 2009

Like my fellow RRC members i haven't palyed this game before but i still liked the music.

As u said, what's the point of a remix that is nothing like the original? I completely agree with u there.

Intro was great and although this is a sort of 8-bit song, instruments sounded very video gameish and they blended in well with each other.

Main melodies and transitions were smooth and blended well with the background. It provided a very Mario Game feel to it which is basically what u wanted to do.

Outro wasn't bad too and basically i ahve nothing to complain about so, like Chrono Trigger, i'm just gonna give u the ten u deserve and to heck with the rest ;)

Author's Response:

Agreed! WOOT! Exactly what I mean. If you create a remix of say...the new "Fireflies" song by 'Owl City' and you don't have the dreamelectrotechno effect feeling that the guy used but rather use something that sounds good but loses the effect of the song overall...well...what the heck is the point?

That is the reason alot of people remix Mario pieces because, for the most part, it is easy to remix a Mario song and still keep the same feeling, that and just about any instrument combination sounds good with most NES/SNES games haha.

But once again it falls under the fact that you HAVE to keep some of the original feel. I could have remade ALL the instruments and even found new samples here and there just to 'modernize' the song a bit. But what is the point of that? Keeping some of the nostalgia and forking in loads of decent samples with some modernization qualities really adds to the piece overall AND makes it sound better in the end. What can I say, I'm somewhat old school that way :o.

-Tony-

But in the end this piece was a fun one and I wouldn't mind going back to do its little brother. It so happens I was working on that and hit a large wall that I couldn't seem to vault on over. Perhaps someday I'll be getting back to it, might even use a revised version of the percussion heard here in that one. Or maybe not...I don't know.......... :[

"Nice one"

date: October 17, 2009

Never played the game, so I have no idea how the original version of this song sounds. But already in the intro I had the feeling that it most be a song for some Mario game, heh.

Rhythm and melodies are very nice in this track and the overall groove of the song is just amazing. But I think would have liked this a bit better if this wouldn't sound like a Midi, nostalgia or not. :P

Author's Response:

Geez you people, sit down, shut up, AND PLAY THE DAMN GAME!!1! Its quite good :3. Haha, you already figured it was for a Mario game? What good ears you have young one :). But seriously, it is an addicting game, consider it Tetris with a twist...and without the super fanatic fan drama.

But since this was originally an 8-bit song (NES anyone?) I should say that though it does sound a bit like a MIDI just imagine if I sat down and said to myself..."You know, I think I will make this sound EXACTLY like the original, just with more flavor [see below for the recipe :o)." I think we would have a incredible NES song up here instead of one that actually sounds better overall. I might go back and remake this one using an orchestra and [perhaps] choir with Brass elements but it is hard to say right now. Frankly though, my biggest excuse is that I like to (when I remix something for the first time) stick to the original feeling the piece had. That is my philosophy, remix something all that you like but keep something of the original feeling intact. The easiest way to do this is make it sound like the original. It is a fine line, but I think I find that line quite often ^^.

-Tony-

Thanks for the review once again 'Review Request Club" and you 'Haggard'. Its appreciated that you guys (and girls) take the time to go through these. But I have to say, I'm always worried about a low score...call me paranoid XD.

A game that I never played before so I haven't heard the original and I'm too lazy to do a quick search to hear the original online. My girlfriend automatically knew what it was though listening to it so it must sound a lot like the original one. It sounds very professional also so good job if you did this all by yourself. If you just took the original song and remixed it... well.. I'm pretty sure that's against the rules. :P

An all around enjoyable song to listen to though. Very upbeat and fun all around. Would be great for any Mario like flash game (duh), but also many other types of flash games or even movies.

Author's Response:

This tune is...timeless I guess you could say. ANYBODY that has ever played the original Dr. Mario will recognize this piece. Having said that I'll admit I stuck fairly close to the original because, in essence, whats the point of a remix if you completely rip apart what made the original good in the first place? The 8-bit sounds and nostalgia you feel when you listen to this piece (if you have played the game) is what helps keep its flavor. The remix simply capitalizes on that fact and brings in another level, one that they may not have been able to bring about waaaay back in the day.

What I am trying to say is that when I remix something it is always a balancing act between keeping the texture of the original (and its flavor) while sprinkling my own spices onto it to make it something new.

Mix:
3 Cups Original Flavoring [Right outta the box!]
1 Cup Crushed Texture
1/2 Cup Well-mixed samples
2 Teaspoons Originality
2 Teaspoons Secret Spice
1 Teaspoon Sledgehammer to the computer for fking up and not letting me save
1/2 Teaspoon Timing
and a heaping amount of enjoyment.

That, my friend, is what creates a good piece...yes...including the sledgehammer. Creates a nice KICK you see ^^.

Overall I understand what you are saying. As for the "If you just took the original song and remixed it...well...I'm pretty sure that's against the rules. :P" I'll admit I do occasionally rip a track or two that is simply too complicated to easy place down or one I want to keep exactly as is but this is mine. I highly doubt you're going to find percussion like what you hear in this piece...though you might hear similar percussion in the future hehe.

Not exactly a great response I know..but I am tired and I don't like to keep reviews waiting.
-Tony-

Thanks though, I'll give a shout when I get another one on stage.
