"Best song on NG!..."
date: February 6, 2010
...No doubt about it. This is definitely my favourite song. Not only from NG, but from any song in existence. Seriously, this song is genius. I can't find anything at all wrong with it. I mean, I probably hear this song everyday, and I never get even slightly tired of it. This is perfection, and I can't understand why generic dance songs with the same unoriginal bassline, horrible production, drum loops and annoying synths are able to get more reviews than this. Be prepared for a review full of praise...
Those melodies... wow. I think I heard something like them before, but whatever, the melodies just sound amazing. They have a mixture of ancient and modern in them, just like your description, and there were so many different melodies! No wonder I never get tired hearing this... Maybe at times the original melody was slightly overused, but that could just be me and my biased criticism. The strings between 1:48 and 2:10 were a nice touch since they provided some good tension to the song, furthermore giving it that epic battle feel. The background depth in this is also amazing - how could so many instruments and so much depth sound so good at the same time? The high strings sort of represented the cries and screams of the 'powers of evil' that the priest was up against, IMO. Loved the choir melody at 1:09, by the way. If only I was that good at using choirs :( ...
The instruments' quality is out of this world, but I guess that's expected from East/West. Your instrument choice is pristine - this song has quite a lot of brass around it, giving it an epic feel, and the strings sounded amazing in the song. Not to mention those brilliant choirs. The fact that they said different things other than 'Ahh' or 'Ooh' was also awesome, and sort of resembled a church choir going on as the priest faught the powers of evil. What I also liked was that you gave each instrument the same importance. You didn't keep one instrument as only a background instrument, or only as a foreground instrument, but sometimes the melody is played by strings, sometimes by choirs and sometimes by brass, which gave this song some great variety.
The transitions are flawless. No transition was even slightly out of place. Drum transitions were perfectly executed, especially the one at 0:15. All the other transitions were excellent, namely the one at 1:45. The song flowed really smoothly, and all instruments were introduced well and not too suddenly. I also liked the buildup towards the end of the song, where you repeated the same melody again and again, except it kept building up until at 2:46 the buildup ends. That was really cool. You don't ever do anything wrong, do you? -.-
As for the structure, it's fantastic, and so is the variety, albeit the main melody maybe is a slight bit overused, although that's just a small nitpick that's not even worth being mentioned. I really liked the intro in this. The song starts and the amazing melody and powerful strings instantly come in and hit you in the face, leaving you gaping in amazement. As for the ending, TBH I think I would've preferred a more powerful 'boom'-ish ending, or you could consider looping it...
Wow, those drums are just wonderful. The beat was very good, and the samples were amazing. They were also varied to just the right amount, and they fit with the song extremely well. I liked the fact that the drum roll you used around the song (for example at 0:23) fit with the main melody that comes in at the beginning perfectly. If there was anything I'd do with the drums, it'd be making them just slightly louder, since at times the other instruments sort of cover them up a little.
Overall, this song is my favourite from all of newgrounds, and if I didn't now how amazing your other songs were, I still would've fav'd you as an artist, based on just this song, and trust me, I've NEVER done something like that. Keep up the extraordinary work, and please submit some more! I'd love to see more of your amazing talent!
