"The Lovechild of August Burns Red and KsE?"
date: June 22, 2009
The better part of the song (mostly the first half) definitely reminded me of August Burns Red. The resemblance was actually uncanny, especially to their "Thrill Seeker" album. If you haven't heard it, listen to some of the songs on there, especially the last two, because you'll notice the similarity to the softer, less dominant guitar part during the heavy low-pitched riff. Also, the mathematics behind that same riff, but this time, the louder guitar, seem to follow a similar rhythm and construction to ABR. There were little bits of drums and guitar throughout that reminded of Killswitch Engage's newer stuff, but it was mostly August Burns Red that I heard in it.
The pros outweighed the cons, however (if you can even consider sounding like two class-act bands a con), and they outweighed them by a huge margin. The riffs were very professional and calculated, and the emotion in the song outclassed most composers on NG. There are tons of options for vocals, so if you include vocals in the final product, experiment with them.
Aside from sounding just a bit too much like other musicians (which is not entirely bad), incredible song. As for the metronome toms, I'd leave them in, but perhaps slow them down and change the timing to build suspense.
