This is the 2nd Episode of mine for two pianos. After writing the first Episode, I was unable to compose this second episode until October of 2008. I wasn't actually sure if I'd be able to write a sequel at all, as my sketches for the second episode were all false starts. Episode 1 holds special significance for me because it was the first piece where I really began to discover my style and voice (I refer to it as my first piece that didn't completely suck). Episode 2 takes the modal properties of the first episode and twists them into something brighter. While the first piece was neutral sounding and sometimes dark sounding, this second episode is an exploration of the same modes using huge chords and sparkly bright running lines. The whole piece is based on the first chord played, as well as the modal tendencies of the first episode. It is in my mind a stylistic refinement of my tone in Episode 1. I enjoyed writing it and it was an easy piece to write, so hopefully you'll find it an easy piece to listen to and enjoy it as well!

by sounds of it this one is really hard to hear i had to turn up my speakers really high. if its supposed to sound like that cool but i cant hear it.

THe melody itself sounds a lot better then the other one and sounds like iw ould like it but due to low sound you cant hear it well. also work on how you end songs at least ending it in a cadence would be suficient you end it with a quarter note, it would make more sense to end it with a half or whole note

Author's Response:

I don't know what to say about the volume issue. I can hear it fine on my laptop and my headphones. My recommendation would be to turn your volume up all the way and use headphones.

A cadence would not make sense in the context of the piece. This piece doesn't use any formal chord progressions and instead shifts between modes based on the main themes. There is no actual I chord in the end, since it could either be in C major or G mixolydian. The piece is predominantly in G mixolydian, but it isn't decisively established, which is one of the traits that connects it to Episode 1. Also, it doesn't really matter what value the last note is, since the sustain pedal is held for the whole second half of the piece until after the end.

Thanks for the positive review!

EDIT: It's updated. I made the ending more final without using a cadence, so I'm happy.
