A Loathsome Lady
This drawing is an attempted personification of the haute couture and high fashion industry.
When I look at the fashion industry at a glance, it seems nice. It seems like a good outlet for the creativity of designers. It seems like a worthwhile pursuit of aesthetic beauty. But closer analysis shows something else. It shows an industry that is just as, if not more so commercial than other consumer reliant industries. I tried to capture this misleading appearance in my drawing.
The Lady appears beautiful at first glance. She has long, flowing silky hair. But a closer examination reveals her hair is merely a distraction from her misshapen body. Her fingers look long and elegant, but they're actually broken and crooked. I also tried to show her two faced nature, by showing her face at multiple angles simultaneously (i.e the impossible eye, neck and lips). I also deliberately put the background geometrical pattern at a slight angle in an attempt to drive home a feeling of unease.
