I've been working with pen and ink illustration again. I loved this medium in high school, and I won a bit of scholarship with it.

When I got to college, my Professor Lasansky, insisted that it was shallow and illustrative, and that it would hinder my development as an artist.

So I haven't touched this sort of thing in four years. I'm finally getting around to revisiting it, and, now that I've taken a dive into the development of a traditionally trained artist, I do appreciate the facture of a good graphite drawing, and I love painting, and I love line, form, and that delicious copulation of figure and ground.

But I still love pen and ink illustration. And now that I'm on my way out, I'm gonna do what I love to do.

I'm hoping to color this piece later. I'm looking at old fin-de-siecle poster art, and the images of high-flying trapeze artists and elegant dancers atop elephants have me completely enraptured. I'm also revisiting a story that is loaded with all sorts of meaning for me.

Dont hate me for saying this...

But the first thing that came to my mind when I saw this was the movie Ponyo. I know thats not what you had in mind, but I remember the facy dressed red haired fellow had a mermaid as a wife. Aaaaanyway, this is very well done. Love the color and style. Its good to see that good looking art can still come from simple methods and tools. Dont let people stifle your creativity by trying to control how and what you work with. Keep up the good work.

PPSSSSSHHHHTTTT!!!! I ADORE Ponyo. Now that you mention it, the way her hair comes down reminds me a bit of the sea goddess.

And thank you for your kind remarks!
