I sketched this little Mario drawing. I'm trying to focus on shading now, so it would really benefit me if you could give me some pointers on that. I was necessarily aiming for it to look like Mario, I was attempting to draw him in the style of my own characters. All comments are appreciated and i will respond to all.
Also, I had to resize the picture due to it being larger than 4 million pixels, so some of it may look compressed and fuzzy, sorry about that!
The People Have Spoken
Average Score: 6.6 / 10
Way too simple. The color on the grass should be darker. As well as the color of the sky. I can't actually tell if the sky was colored at all though. You should use a scanner rather than taking pictures of your art. I like the way mario was drawn but the goomba looks too simple. But the expression on the goomba's face was a nice touch. I also really like the facial design. So this was pretty good. You should draw more people in this style but work on your backgrounds.
Im gonna basically say what the guy below me said. Very expressive face = points
I couldnt draw on paper anywhere as good as that = points. Same thing as the last guy, dont be scared to draw multiple lines, because some people like the sketchy look too!

I appreciate the review, thanks bro!
This is a hard drawing to put a score on. The face is excellent, and very expressive, and the background looks good too. A bit plain, but good. The only problem is that his body is off shape/weird. It's too stiff, I suppose. Don't be afraid to round those edges and draw lines multiple times!
- To shade, start dark and slowly loosen your grip so it gradually darkens (I have problems with shading, too at times).
Very good work, for the most part!

I appreciate the help. Thanks for the tip on curving the lines, I completely understand how odd the body looks. Thanks for the compliment on the face as well.
He's too skinny, so feed him some mushroom sandwiches or something.
His left leg is too skinny and needs to look more attached to the other leg. It kinda looks like mario's rubbing the goomba's head with his foot, so make the goomba look more smooshed. His head shape is a little off, but that could just be your interpretation of mario, so its just a suggestion. But on its own, its not a bad drawing!!!
Author's Response:
I really appreciate the review. Good point about the mushroom sandwiches, I will definately take that into consideration next time I make a drawing.
I am now sad
Author's Response:
This makes me happy :)
You have to improve the anatomy, specially his left leg: it looks like it's sticking out of the body, and its upper part is too small. The upper part of Mario's right hand is also too small. His right hand doesn't look good, and his eyes look a bit lifeless. His pose is also kinda akward. Also, try to make your traces smoother, and paint with more regular lines.
On the upper side, his left hand is very nice (hands are hard to draw).
Lastly, I have a question: is he supposed to be jumping?
Author's Response:
Thanks for the help on the symmetry and legs, I appreciate the compliment on the hands too. No, Mario just has his foot on a Goomba, somewhat looks like he's marking his territory, doesn't it?
I just read your 'New' and felt like giving some pointiers :P
-the body has too many straight lines, they're okay for some parts like the arms, but you may add some curved lines here and there in the body, to make it look more 'natural'.
-that Goomba fellow doesn't look like being stepped-over by Mario, you may put him 'a little more up' and with part of Mario's feet over it, or try other things.
-About the shading, a suggestion is to put an imaginary light source on the drawing. that way you will know which parts get light and which ones are in shadows (probably not the best explanation...just look for a shading tutorial).
Anyway, good thing you have some style on it, and i hope you keep developing it.
Author's Response:
I never thought about the straight line bit on the arms, you make an excellent point on that. The reason the Goomba looks so poor is because I was going to add one so I quickly rushed it, your pointer will definately help me out. I got the majority of the tip on shading, but I'll look out for a shading tutorial. I appreciate the excellent review!
Mario is stepping on a micro-sized goomba! And look at his face!
Author's Response:
Haha, I didn't expect that interpretation from it. Thanks for the review and the ten!
