Samael, the Dragon

Share

It started out as a doodle I did some time ago and there was something about it I quite liked, so I decided to draw a portrait of him. I'm not fully satisfied with the result, mostly because his skin lacks texture. I was thinking of giving a leathery-type skin but I wasn't sure how to draw that and I didn't wan't to risk messing him up.

He's a dragon... And his name is Samael. He lacks the scales and rock-hard skin of most dragons. His facial appearance is also unique in that it shares the likeness of a few notable mammals. Both sides of the snout protrude a little and form a cleft down the middle. The protruding parts seem to be made out of a spongy material, suggesting the animal has advanced smelling capabilities. Another striking feature is the bony chin area (larger in males) which splits at front. Samael seems to be the only member of this very rare dragon species to have this trait. It is unknown whether this is a rare genetic trait or simply a mutation. This dragon is also distinguished for his superior intelligence which is evident by his ability to converse fluently in human speech.

Well shaded! The style/form is lacking somewhat, which might be due to lack of reference (since dragons don't... you know... exist) and the image could stand for optimization. Make sure when you bring a traditional art piece into a digital format, to be careful to let it be represented as best as it can; optimize your images brightness and contrast settings. This can be done on most scanners and cameras, or in post production in a program like Photoshop. Otherwise great job!
