These are bitmaps rather than vectors, so I just used the Gaussian Blur filter in Photoshop, where I had the hand, the blood, and the helmet on separate layers. I applied some blur to the rear--helmet--layer, and a little less to the blood droplets, since they're closer to the hand, which is the focal point.

Holy crap that's awesome. I love the sense of depth you get with the blurring and shading. It goes together pretty well. And who says you need color to make an awesome artwork? =P
