My great American dream would look like an America where everyone is safe to explore who they are without judgement. I chose Kristin Cashore's book Graceling as inspiration for this project. In the book people with two different colored eyes are called gracelings and they have special abilities like mind reading and combat proficiency. Graced children were often taken from their homes by order of that kingdom's king and they would grow up to be servants of the royal family. The book follows a young girl named Katsa, who believes she is graced with killing. Katsa hates dresses and ends up leading a revolution to make the world a fair place, where gracelings are no longer seen as different from humans. The two figures in this piece are both different versions of myself. The one on the right is a graced with bravery. The figure on the left is an exaggerated version of the real me: lonely, a little broken, occasionally depressed. The graceling is inviting the reality to join her on Monster Bridge, which is made of crystal and mirrors. The two versions of myself represent that I'm beginning to discover who I am. The most challenging part of this piece was the background. I definitely pushed my comfort zone with the background.
