Greek Heritage

Reflecting the concept of the inheritance of modern archetypes and stories from Hellenistic Greek mythology, this shot was designed as a part for my game 'The Hoplite'.

Created in iClone 5, a real-time animation suite.

Good

This is a pretty good image, even though the characters are only barely visible. But this is what makes this image look so impressive.

The greek soldiers (could also be roman soldiers) standing in front of a light source. Somehow they look very dangerous even though nobody has drawn his weapon yet. But just the way they stand there, facing the viewer, the faces left in the dark... it has a threatening feeling to it.

Only thing that bothers me are the kind of blurry outlines of the characters. Feels a bit as if the viewer is in desperate need of some glasses.

samulis responds:

It's a stylistic choice of mine... a lot of people critique me for makig things more blurry than they should be... it's pretty much because it's how I see the world. I like to call it 'intense Anti-Aliasing', but the eye doctor likes to call it poor vision. :P

Holy Crap! :DD

This artwork is amazing, and I really applaud you for creating these 3D masterpieces! I can't even imagine where you begin...
I Digress...

This piece is wonderful, and I really loved the color scheme used; it actually did remind me of the "300" artwork as mentioned in Coop's review below.

The actual characters themselves are masterpieces, and I really love how realistic you made these guys look; You my friend are a talented motha fcka!

I cannot wait to see your next works buddy... you rock! :D

Thanks, I'll keep putting up works and asking for the Review Request Club to review them (seriously, you guys give the best feedback I have ever seen).

Skull motifs?

I love the almost sepia colour scheme that you've used for this piece - kind of like the way they did for the colours in 300, this really reflects the way that the greeks have been portrayed for centuries.

While the overall effect of the picture is pleasing, with the sunburst behind increasing the shade, but not diminishing the spectacle of the piece as a whole, the skulls displayed prominently on their skirts is a little strange. I've not heard of any sort of display such as this before and it just seemed a little out of place.

The subjects could have been drawn with weapons, I feel, because this was the way that warriors portrayed themselves back in that age - weapons ready, fine specimens of humanity that they all were. They have been pretty well depicted over the years, so plenty of research material as well ;)

The detail on the chest pieces was adequate, though it looked a little flat. I've seen other images of similar scenes and it is possible to see more "definition" on the chest plates, which were very proudly embossed with the musculature, to be on display at all times.

A hugely impressive piece, please give us more!

samulis responds:

Thanks. The fellow who made the costumes (AnimaTechnica) does more of a fantasy look... using inspiration from historical characters and costumes. I myself make okay costumes, but nothing as fancy as his... I will send him your feedback on the costume... he may like to hear it. :)

I may try to do a more historically accurate render at some point.

Interesting

Well I found this to be rather interesting to say the least. The background kind of gives a feel that they are emerging from some sort of portal into the newer world that they now stand in. They wonder what awaits them as well it seems. Very strange image though.

The guys on the left and right look a bit odd standing in what looks like a womanly pose but who cares really? They want adventure and they are going out and onto that adventure that they seek too. The outfits look pretty cool though.

The guy in the middle looks like the leader maybe. He stands awaiting to give his friends/allies orders on what to do now that they have arrived in a new world too. He wonders what all is there and possibly why the people look and dress differently I would think.

Overall, the image has mixed feeling and thought going into it, it would seem. The mixture of warriors and light give a feel of them making a dramatic entrance somewhere I think. Not bad at all. Just a bit weird on the sides is all.

Thanks for the analysis. I will work harder on the poses next time. :)

Nice

At first I couldn't see the people's faces, but they became a little clear in full screen view. I think you meant for that to happen; nice job, by the way. I don't see many bad things in this, unless I take a close look, so I'm awarding a 10 and moving down by 1 star every time I see a flaw. (Yes, it's that good)
*look*

Okay, so the middle one looks very serious, especially with his helmet on and his arms in the defensive position; kudos for that. The helmet is very detailed, at least that's what it is like from a full screen view. All's well here.

The people on the left and right however, look a bit unnatural. The one on the right's face is looking as though he's been having a couple of drinks lately, due to the slightly drooped left lip, and his left arm's index finger is a tad away from the other fingers, and it seems he's preparing for a photo shoot rather than normal business as usual. It'd be better to have an "invisible" camera, so to speak, so that they don't "know" they're being 'watched'. A bit more natural, please?

There's a solemn look on the person on the right's face, and no drooping lip there; however, the arms do look a tad unnatural, as with the other guy. I know he's meant to be staring at the viewer, but it doesn't have to be *that* obvious, does it?

The background vaguely resembles that of a blurred light source (in this case, I'm reminded of the sun) which gives the people an aura of ghostliness. Good job on that one.

There's no ground, so the characters are virtually floating, but I saw the response you gave ("It was meant to be more symbolic than realistic") so I'm not going to take that into account, but rather say that you did depict the "Greekiness" of the people.

All in all, a nice piece of art. Kudos to AnimaTechnica for the costumes! They look really good! The bodies are in proportion and done correctly, something I often struggle with!

~~ Summary ~~

~~ Good points ~~
1) Good detailing
2) Nice costumes
3) Good shapes & proportions of bodies
4) Nice background

~~ Bad points ~~
1) Unnatural poses (except for the one in the centre)

samulis responds:

Hey there,

Thanks for the detailed reply... this is exactly what I wanted to get. :)

Now I know I need to work on refining the poses so they are more realistic, sounds good.

Regarding the background, it's actually a shot I took in which the lens had been hit with a raindrop and the sun had just come out from a storm (you can barely make out the hill and the sky on the left-hand side as they had been blurred out), with a bit of additional blur.

I'll tell Anima Technica you liked his costumes. :)

Thanks again for the good review!
