Stamper - Destroyed Portrait

Share

I just recently finished up an intensive art course in University - chose to study portraiture and observational figure drawing, so I asked a bunch of inspiring artist friends (Stamper included) to send over photos of themselves so I could try to make a portrait for them as practice. Originally, I intended to send them all the artwork when it was done. Just about all of them were drawn with alcohol-based markers and acrylic paint pens and they took anywhere from 30 minutes to 4 hours.

Unfortunately, the general vibe that I got from my class critiques were that the drawings lacked depth and needed more of a deeper meaning and they weren't good enough just being objective studies of my friends because that was boring. "There [wasn't] anything separating my drawings from the random farmer's market caricature artists who sell their drawings for 40 bucks a piece on weekends."

Long story short, I got really frustrated with conceptual avant garde art because I felt that the subjects I chose to draw were relevant to me and it wasn't good enough in the end, so I chose to destroy all of my portraits as a performance piece. My drawings were "pretty", but people had no reason to care about them. Needless to say, I took that to heart.

I ended up using a water gun full of rubbing alcohol to do so -- got the whole class in on it, too. For the most part, all of the portraits look really creepy now, but Mick and Stamper's almost ended up looking cooler.

Wow very nice

Wow you have something very nice here you really do make it realistic and must have tooken you awhile to get this done, but regardless this was a fantastic piece, nice job here.

~~THINGS TO IMPROVE ON~~
I would love to see some color in these or a color version.

~X~

this is executed exceptionally well. if you feel it lacks emotional depth that is an easy fix. point the eyes down and away. it would look very pensive and thoughtful. full of lament.

A similar thing happened to me at a cambridge art examination. Anyways your response to it was awesome! KEEP IT UP SAB.

Nice work. I used to draw when I was younger but I could never get my picture to look realistic. Obviously you do.

i actually really like how the stamper one became, the blurred coloring makes it look more realistic ^^
