Reductive Charcoal Mannequin Study

Share

I currently have this huge charcoal drawing hanging in my art room - drew it a year or two ago in one of my university art classes and it's always been one of my favourite student pieces, even though it's kind of bizarre.

The method to make it involves completely covering your page in charcoal, then erasing away the light parts of your drawing first. Eventually when you've mapped out the light areas of your drawing, you shade the darker parts last. This method is one of the only ways I've personally used that makes charcoal fun, but it makes a huge mess. Powdered charcoal gets absolutely everywhere.

Anyway, hope you enjoy the subject matter as much as I do.

The print version is available on Redbubble if you're fond of it, too!

well I must say you really did a great job with this. I did stuff like this in my class too, but it was always very challenging get every Crease and wrinkle in the fabric, figure out which need a little bit of shading and which parts need darker shading. I also remember drawing the Mannequins too which was a little easier but still you need to know anatomy well. But putting these two together and managing to pull it off so well. I really hope you got an A in that class.

Sabtastic responds:

Aw, thanks so much for the kind review! I appreciate it. :)

Funny story, I only ended up with a C+ in the course because I skipped class a lot. I think I missed almost half of the total days and my unexcused absences ended up affecting my grade, even though I absolutely adored the subject matter (drawing). I'm a bad student. lol

Very nicely done. This is a style I haven't seen you use indeed. Everything is much thicker and fuller- full of value in comparison to some of your other drawings. I like it, makes me want to break away from my usual cartoony style and practice more real life!

Sabtastic responds:

Thank you! C:
Man, such a nice review.

If I ever work in charcoal, 90% of the time, this is the technique I'll use. I can't keep things neat and tidy to save my life when it comes to art, and I prefer working from light to dark, so it helps IMMENSELY to just let go -- throw down a ton of charcoal right away and then start cleaning up, lifting away charcoal from the start.

You should try it out! I used powdered charcoal to cover the paper, vine charcoal to sketch everything out because it's very eraseable, a kneaded gummy eraser to clear away charcoal and bring out the white of the paper. From there I think I may have used a tiny but of white conte chalk to highlight the very last, whitest parts.

Your diversity astounds me as always. Very nice focus on detail. Shading is top-notch, though I suspect that's the whole point of charcoal.

Keep staying classy!

Sabtastic responds:

Aw shucks, you guys always leave me the nicest reviews. Thank you! x)

I pride myself in artistic and stylistic diversity, I guess. Still have a LOT to learn though!

I shudder to think of the mess hahah, but it looks cool Saberino!

Sabtastic responds:

Thanks! haha

I distinctly remember sneezing black boogers after working on this.
