Female Nude Figure Study in Carbon and Graphite

Share

I've been drawing a LOT lately, but none of it has really been 'art portal' relevant. Here's a little snippet of some studies I did for fun in between those projects, just to prove I'm not dead.

Figure drawing is something I really highly recommend you try if you're aiming to improve as an artist. Regardless of whether or not you draw people, it forces you to refine your ability to capture a subject quickly, and it allows you to get better at things like proportion, shading/value, foreshortening, and you'll learn to draw what you SEE rather than what you THINK you see!

It's hard to explain, but when I draw people in this way, I'm focused more on capturing a subject accurately than I am thinking about how there's a naked person in front of me. You don't have time to get embarrassed, or you miss out on the pose! The human body is such a challenging thing to draw, and there are literally infinite ways to draw one, so you tend to view the person you're drawing in a very objective manner, rather than in a sexual way.

Try it out some time!

Left pose: 30 minutes
Top Right: 40 minutes
Bottom Right: 15 minutes

I posted the rest on my Tumblr (https://www.tumblr.com/blog/sabtastique) if you're curious to see how the shorter poses turned out, too.

Generally a class like this will start with lots of short 1 minute poses, so you can warm up with fast, less detailed drawings. They increase the time to 5 minutes, then to 10, 15, and when you're all ready to work on your final poses, they do two or three 30-40 minute poses for you to work with.

It's really important to warm up in some way when you're drawing.

SORRY ANYWAY I REALLY LIKE LIFE DRAWING THERE YOU GO GUYS BYEE

I particularly like the attention to contrast/shading in (bottom right)

a beautiful drawing, in a very formal artistic form.
Many compliments to you on your skill!

Beautiful work. I really love the sharp contrasts in your shading, and you captured the essence of each pose really well considering the time you had for each (especially the 15 minute one!).

I loved all my figure drawing classes and wish there were more available to take around me right now. My biggest lesson I had to learn was to do a quick general gloss - over sketch just to capture the composition and figure really quick. I always have an inclination toward drawing the detailed stuff right off, which seemed to be a no-no.

Anyway, I love this and I hope you upload more of these sketches! I think these are great to have in the Portal and for others to see your process and practice work.

wow this looks..more challenging than i thought....

i think its the left drawing and esp the face/hair in all panels that need the most work but that's just me.

Good luck and keep it up!

I love these sab! Great to see work from you, hope to see more in the future, especially the explanation of your processes!
