Fogahn Through the Years

Share

At some point in 2010, I doodled the knight on unicorn at my buddy Prettz's house. Kept the paper stowed away for a long time and got distracted with other things.

In 2011, I found the sketch again and scanned it in. Using the source doodle at a layer beneath to sort of guide, I redrew EVERYTHING. But I was constantly getting frustrated with the horse anatomy part of things, and I eventually became really uncertain with how the arm and leg of the rider were turning out. It remained as an unfinished project for more than a year.

Finally, around Christmas, I took in a surge of inspiration from family and friends, and knocked out the finished Rider and Unicorn into the far right...precisely at the last minute for 2012 (because it would be embarrassing if it was finished in 2013 or whatevs)

I learned a lot in the process of creating the final product, and I truly feel like I've grown as an artist upon its completion. What I hope this submission does for you is really drive the point home to "burn your early drafts" because from concept to completion, all sorts of things could change....and you gotta be satisfied with however it turns out because that's the best you could do AT THAT POINT in time.

To adapt to the socratic method of learning, you will ALWAYS be the student, and you will never stop learning and changing and developing if you practice at it. And as far as your early drafts go, "One must let go of what was in order to achieve what can be."

great! even if i my endresult would look different if i could pick from these three... like no 1s mask best. and it reminds me of spawn .. dont know why

Galneda responds:

Spawn was a huge influence for me as a kid, so if you got that out of this, I'm kinda flattered :D

It was probably because that's the only one with triangular "glowering" eyes, which was totally a Spawn and Batman thing.
