I made this for my desktop background.
It's probably the most awesome photoshop image i've ever made, it took hours to complete, and everything was done on Photoshop.

I know this is for the illustrator to see but I'm sure he/she is well aware it is really good

Cliche?? How so and The enter wold is basicly cliche so basicly you can only improve on already used techniques.
and I don't think the illustrator was going for a sci-fi effect here im sure it was simply fort he beauty of space and its vastness and amazing sites.
I'm well aware people don't have the same opinions but you have to be able to look at this and say: "this guy kcicked ass at waht ever he was trying to do."
That is one of the most beautiful images i have seen, i've seen professional backgrounds that don't even look as good as this. Absolutely amazing, the rings look awesome, too.
try to add like a huge third person view of a spaceship or something in the lower left corner, peering down at what ever the heck is going on.
i it is cool and all but i feel like it can use something more artistic, drawing-wise than just doing the standard star noise effect, render clouds, mass lens flares, and dodge tool light streams. it's too cliche and overdone. try and add something of your own spaceship fleet or something in there
