I'm a big fan of the Gorillaz, and their latest album is a tremendously groovy piece of work. As ever, the music videos have featured some stunning animation of the various fictional band members - but, as yet, drummer Russel Hobbs has made only the most fleeting of appearances in the various promo pieces, on account of the fact that (so the story goes) he was left out of the studio recordings and left to swim all the way to Plastic Beach on his own. Along the way he appears to have ingested some most unusual toxic waste, which has caused him to swell to Godzilla-like proportions - watch the video for "On Melancholy Hill" and you'll see what I mean. This piccy follows on directly from that video, with a somewhat-grumpy Russ continuing towards the island accompanied by the real Noodle (perched on his head in her dinghy, natch) and assorted surprised sea creatures. I just thought it'd be nice to put the big guy in the limelight for a bit. Also, I know he doesn't usually have whiskers, but hey, it's a long way to Plastic Beach. Plus I thought it added to his scary sea monster look. Raaarrgh, etc.
