The Forgotten Road

I feel like I made great strides with this one. It actually started out as a character portrait and as I went along I needed a light source, so I made one and before I knew it I just erased the character altogether.
Made in Firealpaca in something like 7 hours. And as usual, I take any questions, comments, or critiques.

I am loving the overall composition and the appeal of the painting as a whole. There is good sense of lighting , and a good mood to it. And i like the perspective as well along with the small indications and elements that are defining the scene.
Coming to the cons, as you have tried to implement depth of field in the setup , a better definition of what is to be focused and what is not needs some more attention. This can be achieved by knowing what all need sharp contrast and what do not. The sharp contrast on the branch in the upper left relative to the vegetals in the right is struggling to define space. Understand lighting more and implement it to spots that require attention.
Happy Arting !

MacOFlannigan responds:

Wow, thank you for the guidance and praise. I feel like you've hit the problems on the head, similar to with what Kaolinn said, it was a problem I was blind to until you pointed it out to me. The hard part for me is knowing exactly what needs focus because the vast majority of my work (including this piece) is procedural where I have a rough idea of what it's supposed to be but as far as points of focus go... well they don't. But thank you for the pointers, I'm probably going to post up an edited version of this on my tumblr.
Thank you again, for the very concise response.

I'd love to walk around this place and if you came up with it all by yourself, I bow to you sir!

The only two problems I had with it were that one, all the points of interest are a bit empty, either if you go with rule of thirds or ..golden rule, I think it's called? I'd love to see either the castle, flowers or (best, imo) the street name sign in focus and in those points.
And two, the places where the direct sunlight hits should be much brighter, at least it looks like an extremely sunny day according to the sky and lens flare? Idk, I may be wrong but the flare doesn't happen if the sun is not shining directly into camera?
Otherwise man, you did an amazing job in 7 hours. Wow.

MacOFlannigan responds:

Thanks for the response! And yep this born of one part inspiration and two parts whimsy, for most of my life I've built scenes like these in my head it just hasn't been until recently that I've had the skill to convey those scenes in a coherent way. Either way, I'm thankful for the praise.
I'm glad that you have an eye for detail, I felt like I needed to add something to kinda bring the piece together, as for the rule of thirds goes... I've never actually had a proper education in art so the terms are a little lost on me but I think I know what you're getting at. And yeah the street sign is going to be the main bit, I'm thinking of playing up the flora around that area, maybe some more flowers and critters maybe a broken wagon wheel or some jazz like that.
Secondly, yes absolutely, that one of those things that I didn't really realize until you pointed it out to me, I guess I got so caught up in the picture as a whole that I neglected some of the more important bits. Lastly for the lens flare... idunno, I feel like you can get it if you get a little bit of the sun or if it's just barely behind something. Maybe I'm wrong, but I kinda just added it on a whim and loved it so it stuck.
(and if I'm being honest it was closer to seven and a half hours)
And again thank you for the well thought out response!
(and the complements!)
