City of Masks

Share

Well, I watched a video on Youtube of Meredith Gran inking a page of Octopus PIe (a webcomic I like), and I found it really interesting. So, I figured I'd give the whole "comic" thing a shot. I've never made one, so this is my first and I kind of enjoyed making it. I made it with the idea in my mind of a city where people always wear masks and where it almost always rains. Whether or not I decide to continue this depends on whether or not people like this.
Feedback is appreciated, just don't flame me too hard about this, it's my first attempt at making a comic strip.

I feel like I know them.

I really love the atmosphere of this comic. It also has a very aesthetically pleasing layout. It's very reminiscent of a descriptive piece I had to write for my creative writing class. I wrote about a very surrealistic city where the sun only showed up one or twice a year, and where peculiar creatures dressed in masks and harlequin costumes would appear, to kidnap children and burn buildings down. These characters of yours seem like they would fit into that city well.

Luxembourg responds:

Your idea sounds a lot like the idea behind the comic, and that makes me feel so unoriginal. Mine is of a city where it's always raining and everybody always wears a mask of some sort. These two, who I've yet to reveal the names of, wander the parts of the city that are abandoned for reasons yet to be revealed. It still has a long way to go, honestly.
I'm intending on expanding it, I just don't know when I'll have the time or motivation to make the next part.
I'm really glad you like it. I personally felt pleased with the layout, especially with the cloud in the top-middle area. Atmosphere and aesthetic are things that I'm a nut for. Thanks for the review and the very kind score!

Potential

The drawing needs some work, but I really like the world. This could either go somewhere very dark, or somewhere very sweet and funny.

Luxembourg responds:

Well, yeah, like I said, this is me trying out something new. If you want to see better drawings, go look at the other things I have in the portal. I'll try and give future installments better art.
I could see it going either way, too. I haven't planned much farther ahead than this on this story. I think I'm going to end up leading it somewhere nicer rather than meaner, though, just because that's my artistic disposition, for the most part.
I think I'm going to do an image for each of the characters, as introductions, next.
Thanks for the review and the score.

wow

I really like this... The idea sounds pretty good. I like how the sun hasn't been around in years.

In the fourth panel I cant tell what the guy said at the end of his sentence. So as criticism I'd say make the strip some what cleaner, you know, straighten out the lines a bit.

Luxembourg responds:

"Meh, bright lights like that are little more than a nuisance." is what he said.
It looks a lot clearer in the original version, which is pen on paper, but I think I sized it down a tad too much on the computer.
I really should have used a straight-edge for the lines, which I meant to do, but I couldn't find a ruler anywhere. I'll make sure to do that should I make more.
Thanks for the comment and the nice score!
