Enameled Tile

Share

6"x6". High-fired unleaded enamels on a copper sheet, with half-spheres of copper made with a metal hole punch. The goal with this one was to demonstrate various techniques, esp. sifting, stenciling , sgrafitto, wet inlay, shards, threads, high-firing and collage. This one took me about four months, working on and off.

To explain, enamel is a mixture of ground glass and other things designed to fuse to a substrate, usually copper, gold, or silver, calculated so that the glass melts and cools at the same temperature as its base metal. It comes in transparent and opaque colors, and can be seen on a wide array of items- particularly jewelry, small sculptures and kitchen wares. It's an ancient art form practiced in various cultures all over the world. Ask if you want a more detailed explanation of any particular method- I used too many techniques on this one to explain them all.

The many layers of transparent and opaque enamels and how they react to light is difficult to convey in a photograph- it looks immensely better in person, I promise you.
