Illustration for...an illustration course! The assignment was to choose 2 words from a given list and morph them into a unique character. Below is my concept statement:

This creature was the unfortunate specimen of a scientific effort to merge machine with sea creature, using these cyborgs to advance studies of the ocean and the life that inhabits it. Even after being part of a sea wreck being transported between facilities, it eventually found its way to where it belonged, carrying on its usual duties, including the repair of undersea research capsules. What a faithful worker!

The creation of this piece was primarily an exercise in character creation and a more complex illustration process. I spent much more time in the concept phase than in past pieces, including the creation of thumbnails and visual research. The extra time spent on analyzing how the piece can best serve its purpose of telling a story ultimately resulted in a stronger piece than if these additional steps hadn't been taken.
