grayscale practice girl

I've been wanting to draw really badly, even though I have a lot of other work ahead of me, I want to better my style and use some advantages of drawing digital more, and actually learn how to use my tablet. I now finally feel like I'm learning how to use layers and getting down to detailing areas.

So for this, I found a picture of this girl on chive, and wanted to try to sketch more naturally and blend it after. It works insanely well for me... like, holy shit, I lost track of time, but I'm so happy. I think from now on I'm gonna go this route with my work.

Gray scale study sketched with a broad brush, fixed levels & proportions, then smudged/blended and redrew the rough areas. Total around 9 hours

I might color it, but I gotta figure out a better way to do it than how I normally do, my method takes way too long... If you know a way to do it, please tell me!

The amount of detail in this is absurd. From a distance it looks photorealistic, and she's pretty cute on top of that. Bottom lip looks a tad big and the eyebrows are a tiny bit too heavy but this is crazy talent.

Wonderful, I can see practice makes perfect. Wonderful work on getting that shading down, makes for great textures and shadows on the face and hair.

Labyrinthus responds:

Thanks man! I've been trying to figure some different techniques, and I'm now in love with this way! I have to make texture bump maps for some school work, and wanted to try the method to draw something. I'll try to mix this way and also with more of a rough style, but I now finally feel more comfortable with my tablet!

Yay.new art from u after so long....
u seem to have improved in realism.*thumbs up*
i love how u did her hair...very free flowing
also i like the shadow of her hair on her face...:)
i wouldn't know what u should work on cause i dont know how the reference pic looks like.anyway good job.

Labyrinthus responds:

Haha, yeah thanks! I'm getting past that disconnect I've had, it's now getting easier to draw where I'm not looking. I'm super happy with the hair too! I didn't know that you can smudge just highlights or darker colors in Ps until now... so much nicer.
