I'm doing this random 30 day drawing challenge that I found somewhere in the murky depths of deviantart. Day 6's theme: favorite book character, so this is Temeraire from Naomi Novik's book series of the same name. Figured I'd put this up, seeing as I haven't submitted anything in a while.

In other news, drawing scales with pencils is hard. And time-consuming. As a result, I definitely ran out of steam by the time I got to the bottom of the neck. And I'm apparently a bit of a masochist, since I decided to put a crapton of tiny scales on his face. Did I mention this is the first time I've drawn scales? Yeah. Also, I suck at metal :D

You have captured Termeraire quite beautifully, I'm simply impressed.

I understand scales are hard and indeed very time consuming, but what you have here is marvelous work. The way you did the shadowing without dulling the detail is perfect, and with just a touch of blue really evens it all out. I'm still working on perfecting my art, and have not built up the courage to post them yet on NGs.

Love to see more of your talents, and do keep up that great work of your.

krissalus responds:

Thank you very much, that's really nice of you to say :) I think I might try a slightly different technique next time I do something like this, just to see if I can get more of the effect that I wanted, but I'm glad that the texture of the scales seems to be coming across.

It can be pretty intimidating to put up the first of anything on any site, but it's also a great way to get feedback. I've actually had a lot more people leave helpful responses on my art here than I have on deviantart. So while perfecting your style is great to work at, don't be afraid to see what others might think too :)

I thought that you drew the scales marvelously! keep up the good work, I would love to see more

krissalus responds:

I think that there's a lot that could be improved, but it was definitely good for practice and I learned from it, at least. I'm glad you like the drawing, though. Thanks for your review :)
