Streak the Hawk, Rider of the Calm Winds.
My Current ranger in the current Dungeons and Dragons campaign I am playing just hit level 4 and is suppose to receive his spells and an animal companion. But after with a discussion with the DM I have sacrificed all my spell like abilities for a more powerful animal companion and better communication with the creature.
I think this could come in to some interesting role playing quarks.

It's pretty good. Something bugs me about it though, I can not quite put my finger on it. Level 4 you say? 3.0 Ranger? Also you did not have to sack your spell casting, there are feats for what you did. Wait... I'm supposed to critique your art not your char from D&D... I... I'm so confused.

yeah a 3.0 Ranger gets it's animal companion and spells at level 4. And although I know of the spells your talking about to make the companion more stronger, they wouldn't have been quite as good as what I got in turn.
With permission of the DM, I got me a Celestial Hawk. I named him Streak the Hawk; Rider of the Calm winds. He has quite a few abilities that normal companions don't have. He can cast Smite Evil once a day. Has shit tons of bonuses to spot and hide. has resistance 5 from all the different elemental damages.
I get full communication with the hawk instead of it simply having tricks and basic commands. Then to top it off, the Streak likes to drink alcoholic beverages. He even got in to a drinking contest last game.... um.... he passed out on the first round....
Anyway, I know that it seems that I'm trading off a lot, but I am honestly getting a lot in return. Even with out the spells to help aid me and the party, I think the comedic value and challenge to myself is well worth the trade.
Reveiw of hawk
There are only a couple of improvements that would benefit this drawing. First the head of the Hawk is very important to this drawing because it is the focal point of this drawing, so it is very important to get the head right. As it stands now, it would look better if the hawk was looking directly at the viewer. This would create a better emotional response from the viewer. In doing this the wings would also have to be repositioned to compensate. Next is the body of the hawk this is also a critical point because the viewer will first see the head due to the contrast around the hawkâEUTMs eye. Then continue down from the hawkâEUTMs head and long its spine then suddenly stops where the wings meet. This is not something you what to happen is a pic because it causes the viewer to be momentary confused. I know that this is a prelim sketch so at this point itâEUTMs not terribly important but something to think about if you plan on presuming further in creating a finished Drawing.
