Twin brothers, geographically isolated, discover the single marginal factor that separates them. On the onset of the latest coup d'etat to end the Second Spanish Republic the brothers choose different sides. In the name of ideology and the future, the twins turn rifles on each other in the Spanish Civil War.

As the precursor to the Second World War, the Spanish Civil War was a hot new battleground that could be narrowed down to Capitalism vs. Socialism. Far more radically, Fascism vs. Communism or Conservatism vs. Progressivism.
The eyes of the world were fixated on which force would be the one to emerge victorious out of the conflict. The liberal Republicans or the traditionalist conservative Nationalists. The Soviet-backed Republicans sought to preserve the increasingly Socialist Government while the German, Italian, and Portuguese-backed Nationalists sought to overthrow it.
The Nationalist rebels were almost all former or then-current military, backed by the Roman Catholic Church, and were arguably better equipped than the Government forces. The Republicans were capable, but divided. Communists, moderate-Socialists, Anarchists, Marxists, and others made up a divided force. In the end, these factors led to Nationalist victory and the downfall of the Second Spanish Republic.

After victory is won the older brother, Arturo, makes an effort to find his family. Pedro, the younger brother, tries to evade the Nationalist's long enough to get evacuated somewhere safe. As the effects of the war on the combatants, on the landscape, and on the population become clear as well as discovery of inhumane actions on both sides, the brothers realize theirs and their countries roles as puppets for the grand world stage leading into World War 2. How the brothers choose to move on with this knowledge lies the story. Will the victor revel in his glory? Will the defeated survive the White Terror? Can a severed bloodline be reunited? Can a puppet sever its strings and if so, will it ever move freely? And lastly, is true freedom a good thing?

(Through heinous events, Pedro finds escape to the Soviet Union. It is there he will meet a female Russian named Ina and start a family. They will give birth to twin daughters, Celina and Elena. Pedro's family is the subject matter of The Overseer, my very first animation here on Newgrounds)

Sounds like a great setting for animated storytelling! The Spanish civil war is something that has become somewhat neglected and forgotten in the modern history books, in school, at least. The only thing I can compare it to is the Mexican Revolution from 1910-20. But I wonder, what does the swastika has to do with anything? Did you add it as a counterpart to the Hammer and Sickle?

aggimajera responds:

Yes, it is a counter to the Hammer and Sickle. In this particular case the swastika has the typical double meaning associated with it: peace and Fascism. The Hammer and Sickle are associated with Stalinism and Communism.

But yeah, this area of history is completely blank from the history books here. We're too focused on the Superpowers of the time to be able to see the effects of conflict on other countries. I always wondered why Spain, in such close proximity to the battlefields of WW2, chose to remain neutral. Now I know.
