As media induced humanoids, our minds are set towards seeking a laugh from a 'cartoon' styled depiction. It's our default setting now. In the past certainly, editorial cartoons were used as very powerful propaganda that could change the course of elections, or cause unsure teenagers to enlist in the army. Their role was much like the movie Fahrenheit 911 was to todays society, or at least attempted to be. Now far more informed as a society, this art form just couldn't hold that sway, I don't believe much of anything could today, just too many varying view points with excessive access to all of them. Even all at once if one so wanted. So editorial cartoons have become far more that, cartoons as opposed to propaganda, they still make a political statement, but it's lost all it's power, so a lot more editorialist tend to go for the funny bone more than ever and that adds to the default setting being set to it's current position in most minds, especially in the younger generations, I suppose. Well editorial cartoons are a bit different to the other forms as you may well know. Most of our sense of humor as humans comes from the absurdities in our lives. So whereas most, but certainly not all, panel strips and gag cartoons celebrate those absurdities, making light of them, editorial cartoons tend to call them out for more serious observations, they're almost reprimanding in nature, a reproof of sorts towards those absurdities. They also tend to be more cynical in nature to some extent and are based almost exclusively on politics which, let's face it, is a really bland subject matter to most minds to begin with, but nevertheless certainly still holds ample fodder for some good hearty laughs. The aim with this specific editorial however, was to leave an indelible impression of the circumstances at hand and was not to be overly entertaining, so as to take anything away or delude rather, the impact of that impression. At the same time it was a homage to the much older editorial styling, breaking away from the predominant style of most of todays top editorialist cartoons. I understand and agree with your point on the labels, but it's what this specific premise called for and I believe it served it justice in light of it's proper context.
