Battle of the Gods

Share

Tonight I got around to watching Dragon Ball Z: Battle of the Gods. Its my first time watching something Dragon Ball related in probably about 8 years. It had some pacing issues but overall I enjoyed the movie, thought it was fun.

Something not a lot of people know is that I (like my artists my age I suppose) went through that stage in my teens (god bless the early 2000’s) where I was obsessed with the show and spent a lot of time trying to mimic its anime stylings. I remember setting the VCR to record it before school every morning, watching the first 15 minutes before catching the bus, getting home from school and watching the recording with my sister and then AGAIN with my dad when he got home from work, which was usually about 10 minutes after watching it through the first time (anybody else’s dad watch it with them?). It really shaped my life for a long time.

Its certainly not something I think comes through in my more recent work but if you look at my cartoons from 2003/2004 they have their inspirations written all over them. Hell, I even wrote a 150 page manga (which I still have by the way) which was basically just a rip off of DBZ. Suffice to say I gave up on drawing anime before I could ever give up on it, maybe thats for the best, I guess we will never know. I do know that I have never been able to emulate the sense of energy a lot of anime has, maybe some day I will work it out.

Anyway, this is what I drew while I was watching it, that is all.

very cool and unique.

Hay king Kai! I like the new ears!

Gerkinman responds:

Ha ha, cheers, I like drawing big ears for some reason.

Haha, I love the art style too! :D

Gerkinman responds:

Im glad people like it! I didn't know how they would feel about it.

I'm not a fan of super deformed stuff, but this goes so far in that direction that I start liking it again. The fact that both characters are JUST heads with limbs and hair, is kinda charming in a way.

Gerkinman responds:

I draw a lot of things like that, I don't think its so much that its inspired by chibi styles as it is just me trying to find a way to illustrate things that I don't see a lot of other people doing while still keeping it visually appealing.
