Duality of Human Nature

Share

This is theme art I produced as an assignment in English class. It references the novella "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde".
Light shines on a blue construction of Dr. Jekyll which holds up a flask. The flask represents civilized behavior, morality, and intelligence. The light that shines on Jekyll represents Jekyll's peers and only sees Jekyll, but not what lies behind Jekyll which constructs a shadow casted by the light. The shadow shows Hyde lifting a cane instead of a flask. Hyde uses the cane in hand to beat Sir Danvers Carew, a client of Jekyll's, so it represents primal behavior, violence, and disoriented manor. The red shadow of course, depicting Hyde, stands as Dr. Jekyll's dark side; the red and blue contrast separates the two entities as opposites.
