Titanic circa 1985

Share

This is one of my most prized posessions. I found a copy of National Geographic magazine from December 1985 at the thrift store. Moments later, I found the return issue from December 1986, where they revisited the wreck. I was fascinated by the pictures, and knew I had to build it.

The original model was almost 3 feet long. All I had to go by were the pictures in the two magazines, but every possible detail was reproduced on the model.

It took me an entire year to complete, and was finished in February 1995. Yup. Before Leonardo and Kate even showed up, I had this sitting in my room.

Model: RMS Titanic plastic model kit by Academy Minicraft

Scale: 1/350th

Time to complete: 1 year (Begun 2/1994 - Finished 2/1995)

Wreck size: 15 inches

Base size: 12 x 24 inches

I was inspired to build dioramas when I saw a diorama of a P-61 Black Widow built by Sheperd Paine. You can see it here: http://sheperdpaine.atspace.com/p61.htm.

Model building is a dying hobby, as people aren't taught to do hobbies as much, nowadays. Shep inspired me. Now, I hope that this model inspires someone out there. Pick up a model and build it. You might just like it. You might just make something great.

I hope you enjoy this. Thank you for looking at my model. :)

***Don't forget to bring it up to full size so the close-ups are easier to see.***

Nice! This is so cool, I absolutely love these builds. I can definitely relate to and admire your passions here. Thanks for providing the specs and stats of the model and process. Absolutely incredible detail, and I'm especially digging the darker shots that recreate the dark environment of the ocean floor.

Fantastic Model.

Do you remember, in Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Richard Dreyfus made the mountain model? As the dawning comprehension of what it was washed over him, he was increasingly gripped by the obsession of going there.

So, when is your scuba trip planned?

Why the F the score is so low? This model is amazing. I would never had enough stamina to build something like this. And I would kill to have this model in my house.

Found this under the diorama tag and sweet mother of moses this is amazing, please don't stop with your hobby, it is beautiful beyond reason!

Terrific build, and the detail you got from merely photos, is quite honestly astounding. I have nothing to say negativley about this. Keep up the great work. And if I may make a suggestion. Paint it. Love the peice 5 stars.
