This was a fun little thing I made.

It took way longer to finish then I'd like to admit. Personal struggles unfortunately drained me of my motivation to draw for a few weeks.

The girl was pretty fast to finish, it was the background that gave me trouble. I couldn't decide what would feel best. Would she fall from the sky? Rise trough a tunnel-system to the stars? Standing still on a square and looking up?

So I decided to just try things for the background and see what would stick.

Later on I learned that's pretty much how I view my current situation. Since I do not know if I am moving foreward, standing still, or am I moving backwards?

(for me it turned out to have a deeper meaning then intended)

The girl herself is quite well done but the girl in relation to the background, the lighting, and the composition can make the image look quite confusing. At first glance it looks like the background is a sky and the girl is falling however, upon further inspection the girl leaves a shadow on the background and the back ground has circles on it which now appear to be ripples which make the spots in the foreground appear to be raindrops.

I realize that adding lighting distortions to water to create a ripple effect can be quite difficult but there are other ways to make the overall image more recognizable and consistent. For example, you can soften the lighting of the overall image, lengthen and darken the girl's shadow and add a cloudscape to background so it looks more recognizable as water.

Djoresh responds:

I agree that it's rather weird. The shadow and lighting of the girl and background are indeed confusing.

Though that was abit what I was aiming for. Since I am unsure if I am growing/standing still or falling down. And that's the personal touch I wanted to add into this piece

It's also a matter of perspective, everyone might see this image differently. But I suppose I failed to make it visually interesting and understandable.

Thank you for your review and I will practice some more on ripple effects on water and how to convey my message in my illustration.
