Done on black paper with colour pencil.
A mother dragon attempts to get her stubbon baby to fly.
Some of my art (this included) is already posted on Elfwood and Deviant art, and one forum I visit. So don't panic if you see it up on those sites. I'll be leaving a note on those sites saying the same thing.

I really like this, especially the shading, it adds a nice soft texture yet well defined. It's also a good change for other dragon pics where the dragon is all enraged and defensive. The baby dragon is really cute too. Good job ^^
Maybe because of my inability to draw anything I always get dazzled when I look at draws like that, it's shocking for me to know that you did that with a pencil!Amazing.. you can actually see the relutance on the baby dragon and the gently persuasive face on the mother. The background gives an amazing ambience of fantasy even tough you're only using regular stuff(mountains, trees and other things we see everyday)!

Thank you!
I'm glad the dragon's expressions come across, those things can be strangely random for me - I swear half my stuff takes on a life of it's own and just does what it wants to do!
So here you go. Wow aren't dragons wonderful majestic creatures. So loving and powerful commanding respect that everyone and thing that looks up to it. All because they live in the fantasy la la world of make believe. The pencil, colored that is, is surreal. A true rarity here on the NG.

Needs more non RRR reviews... LOL
Well thanks. *grins*
With luck I will be able to upload more traditional art soon, once I get all the parts for this scanner sorted.
I like the way it all manages to flow right together and blends with the elements around it as well. Kid of feels like a story as well, the baby dragon had gotten lost one night and the mother or father dragon had to search everywhere for it until they eventually found it where they had forgotten about it, very nice art. :)

Thank you. I am glad when people get stories from my art - this is often one of my favourite thing when I look at or design a piece.
What I like best about this picture is the warmth. It feels lovingly crafted, and something about using colour pencils just gives you a living texture that computers cannot match.
The direction of lines on the big dragon is excellent, providing a bit of a blur/motion effect. Great palette. I also appreciate details on the rocks and grass.
If I may ask, what kind of colour pencils did you use?
Author's Response:
Just bog standard ones really. The brand is Faber-Castell, but they are just basic colour pencils.
I have some fancier stuff - water colour pencils, ink pencils, tinted charcoal and graphite and my acrylics - that I am panning to upload once I can use a scanner again. Interesting effects, but I have no idea how my glitter-stars will translate with a scanner...
Thanks for the review!
I've been so surprised with the art portal so far. Amazing stuff so far and I have to say that this has to be one of the best pieces of art that I have seen so far. The amount of detail that was put into not only the dragons, but just everything in itself. The grass, tree, rocks, sky, etc..
Great colors and everything is just good about this. I really can't think of anyway to critique it. Good job all around!

Wow, thanks!
Well, I think I will visit the art portal more often if I can expect pictures to be THAT good!
I like how detailed this picture is. Not only the dragons are drawn with great detail (you can almost hear the wings flap from the mother dragon...) but also the grass, the cliffs and the sky offer some great details. Must have taken you pretty long to get this all done. I especially like that the sky is only partly clouded. Many artist seem to go for only one at a time: A clear sky or a clouded sky. In this picture we have both. Great. :)
Only downside is the left side of the baby dragon where is wings are. It looks a bit strange as if there is one part of the dragon missing.
Anyway, the picture is still great and worth a 10! ;)

I like a mixed sky - I think it is interesting, more colours, more textures... The only time I either go one way or another is with a starry sky, because I think stars are pretty (I think this is an exception to that trend lol), and when I draw storm clouds, which I also think is very cool. :D
As for the baby, I think that was down to me not being used to drawing dragons that small, young and in that pose. I was trying for perspective but I see what you mean, it does look a little off.
Truly a great piece here. I like the coloring here the most, very realistic. The background is very well done.
It has a cool theme too, I like the baby dragons expression of fear at the top of the cliff.
Overall a great piece, very well done coloring and shading. Awesome backgrounds, I love it.

The colouring was certainly interesting. It was kinda an experiment in that this was the first time I employed a few techniques over a full piece. I had used them before just not on this scale.
A great little piece that certainly captures the essence of motherhood with the dragons looking so graceful and yet ready to cause some serious damage, as the myths and legends would suggest.
The best part of this piece is the background, as you've clearly spent a long time looking into making the most of the cliff-face and the starlight. The moon peaking out from behind the partial cloud cover and the mother's tail just goes to show how you've concentrated on it as a whole.
Perhaps we need to see the baby a few years after the creation of this piece, to see how it is getting on.

Maybe I will do the baby when it is older, or perhaps its siblings... not sure if I will do another pencil study or a digital piece though.
