Finally, a new, just finished piece of art! Not another oldie! Yay!
*Twitches* If I ever have the oh so bright idea of doing scales to this level again, I want someone to hit me with something. So... many... scales... It's enough to send someone slightly mad.
Speaking of which, as I was nearing the completion of this piece, I could of sworn I saw this thing blink at me, twice! On two separate occasions! That has never happened before!
Very odd...
Edit 10th July: Posted this one to all three of my art galleries (here, Deviant art and Elfwood). Elfwood moderates all incoming art to check it is suitable... this got modded last night and it made moderators choice! Now this is one of the art pics cycling though over on Elfwood's home page! My first mods pick! I'm so happy!

Looks like I have another favorite, what can I say?
The detail is incredible, each scale looks painstakingly good. The shadows are amazing, the shading is perfect, and the background fits perfectly for the dragon.
The texture of it all is really amazing. Much effort was put into this piece of artwork, and boy does it show. The blue eyes created a nice contrast against the abundant orange, and everything else is just fantastic.
I knew this was going to be great, and you didn't let me down :D.

Very detailed
As I well know, this took some Herculean effort to draw the dragon scales on this piece. Please can you refrain from ranting so much about it, because it was most definitely worth it!
The blue eyes go against my own perception of dragons, but let's not go into that - they are certainly a captivating centrepiece that draws the viewer into the picture, before allowing them to look at the magnificence of the image.
The background is nice, but a few tweaks here and there with the rock face, you can perhaps give a more evident portrayal of three dimensions here - it looks a little too flat. The plant life is well detailed, but a nice touch in just blending the leaves into the background, leaving the soft focus effect there helps keep the main attention on the dragon itself.
When it comes to the dragon, I have two main concerns. The muzzle - there doesn't look like there was enough of a point between the nostrils for the actual nose-ridge there. The second concern is the shape of the dragon's right shoulder - do the scales really behave like that, or is this something that just has a tiny positioning issue.

The nose ridge... does it need a point? why? Plenty of animals have a ridge but a flat end to their nose! It is supposed to flatten out towards the end, maybe that just isn't showing through enough? That is what you are on about, right?
The shoulder is a bit of a mixed thing, drawn from a few sources, reptile, animal, fiction, and probably a a little human in there too. For the scales I have drawn from the plates on some of the more heavily armoured reptiles, like the armadillo lizard and the giant sungazer lizard (I REALLY REALLY want one of those!! So beautiful... *sigh*). I'm not too happy with how it turned out, mostly because of his back, I think I needed more of that on show to make it look better. Oh well.
The background... well, I am still working on those in general.

Wow. The background is amazing. I love the detail on it, and the texture on it is great too..
The actual dragon is pretty good, and once again I love the texture and attention to detail. However, the dragon looks a bit like a cat, which doesn't really work. There's also something about the perspective which is off..
I always criticise you on your colour choice, but here it's better. The only thing is the blue. It just doesn't work with the colour scheme. I think some shade of brown woould have been better.

Ah, that colour scheme again... It's all a matter of contrasts really. Contrasting colours make each other stand out. Blue and orange contrast. So do the purple hints in the frills contrast with the green plants. I went with blue here (and the purple flecks) to do just that - make this stand out. If I had made it brown, a colour very close to orange, the dominant colour in this picture, then it would have become flat (believe me, I test this when I make them - I like to play around with colour balance).
Contrasts can be a matter of personal preference though. A few like them in huge amounts, most like them only if used in moderation, while others just don't get on with them unless used very subtly. I like them when used as highlights, and I do make use of it a lot. You seem to prefer an Analogous colour scheme; colours that sit next to each other on the colour wheel (red, red-orange and orange for example). That's fine, but unfortunately it does create quite a clash in our art tastes!

As soon as I saw the request in the RRC thread I was looking forward to finally review this and the picture didn't disappoint me!
Way more than the scales I like the little lines in the background, because I think the background gives the picture a more "realistic" look.
The dragon itself is again done very nicely. I do not like the head that much, but maybe our image of dragons differs a bit here. ;)
Anyway, another great picture!

Its ok to like one type of dragon over another - when it comes to dragon art, the imagination is the limit and everyone is bound to have their own idea. :)
I did a lit of playing around with that background - first it was a few rocks and trees, but the lines were not right, then it was a load of sloping rocks and a bit of sky, but that made it look like it was at too much of an angle. Then I settled on the cliff face and spent a good while making my mind up as to what type of cliff face would look best - turns out there are a lot of different looking ones!!
So yeah, glad you like it! Lol. :)
