Asterix Commission!

Share

This is my second Asterix commission I've done and I still haven't read the comics! I should be ashamed haha. This was a birthday present for two sisters. There was personal text at the bottom of their feet but I removed it to just focus on the drawing.

Love the pulp texture. real subtle...

those sisters are attractive like wow XD

This may not be relevant to the art as much as it is to art culture, but I'm disappointed by how the men all have different body types and proportions while the women only share one. The qualities of a character tell you about their personality. Giving someone orange hair and big feet for example makes them solely unique in that way, and allows you to attribute those qualities with their character as you become more familiar with them. So when someone makes all their women have one body type it shows a subconscious belief that a woman's looks take priority over her uniqueness as an individual. I'm not mentioning this because I have a problem with it, it's just the first thing that caught my attention.

As for the drawing, my biggest issue is that many of the lines are drawn with an awkward inflection. It reminds me of clip art which is probably a bad thing. A general rule for laying out characters in an environment is that you want them to stand out over the background. In this case you made almost all the background lines heavier than the character lines, which is the opposite of what you want to do.

doublemaximus responds:

I understand what you're saying, but I was only sticking to the original styles of the comics which I have no control over style. As for how the women seem 'generalized' by looking 'attractive', I was only doing what the commissioner asked, which was to make her and her sister 'more flattering' and redirected me to the women of the Asterix comics for me to take note on how a certain female character was drawn.

Wow, I'd really like to have someone hold my club and/or menhir, while beating up NWO freaks ;) It doesn't have many minute details, but still looks lush and colorful!

doublemaximus responds:

Haha I thought you would like this! Yeah she wanted me to make it look like a comic page as much as possible so I tried my best. She is pleased with it to say the least :)
