My body withered and wilted. It never gained that composure back. My faith and love was rewarded with hate and punishment. The things didn't even know what they were doing. Not to me, not to themselves. They dabbled away at the smoke rising from their chests because they traded the hearts that once filled them. They traded them for fire to keep warm.

I retracted into the depths of my mind, this gesture of self preservation. My mortal will was broken. My health failed me. I felt my hands shake. I watched the limited youth vanish with each disregard, every external influence and tampering. A world of intellect and discovery lost to impatience. They always wanted more because they don't feel anything but guilty air in their chests. Each time they came to me, they didn't add. They took piece by every delicate piece until I finished a broken man.

I hate them all so very much. They listened to my woes and my crying out...and shrugged. All they could hear was the softening of my breath. I was growing weaker. I made a promise to them. to all of them.

I promise I will make you things see. That you will not do unto others that you have unto me. That greed and suffering would not be our way but a vanishing blight on the horizon, forgotten just like me.

And here I am again. My body is broken once more and I do not know how long I will last. Know that when my breath begins to soften...I promise...I will be back. I always come back.
