Ansil the broken

Share

Inspired by Clod B's " Growing back again " which can be found here https://soundcloud.com/clod-b/growing-back-again

The great wolf Ansil wandered the woods beneath the cloaks of a human. If you passed in diligence and respect..all you would hear were the soft winds as if Ansil was breathing with relief for the forest it protected. When the horizons darkened, you could hear the padded paws of her daughters pass in the cold dirt of the roads. When she grew too great in size, the many people of the valley came to fear her, and so they hunted down the wolf and tore away at her fur until she was little more than anything. The great wolf Ansil could be heard throughout the forests. Their cries found in the splintering branches of withering trees.

A boy from the valley had found a tuft of fur so long ago, and when he awoke one night, he found it wandering away into the forests and trees. He knew the stories, and heard of the monster wolf..yet as he went deeper in, he could hear the gentle distant songs in the night. When he had seen the pale fur in the moonlight, the boy realized it was Ansil's daughters who sang so bitterly into the cold air. It was terrifying..and yet.. what monster sang such sad things?

Ansil's daughters would not stop singing, somberly dancing around their mother and ringing a rusted bell. At the center of their dance, Ansil cried out in despair. The fur was returning, and the boy held onto the one he kept as his own. He crept from the bushes and the daughters kept singing. When he kneeled before the wolf mother, he could see the tears in the fur and the tired stare in it's eyes. So he held out his hand and fur. For the first time in many years, the old wolf smiled.
