A Friend in Space

Share

Hello there fellow earthling
I am currently practising to get the likeness right in portraits. A dear friend of mine volunteered to be painted and this is what came out after a few hours chatting with a friend, drinking coffee and painting casually.

Thanks for having a look and I hope you’re going on to have a wonderful day :)
Best wishes
Rahel

Edit: Alright, this is kind of hard for me to do but seeing that some of you might be pushed into an awkward situation if I didn’t, I think it’s fair to provide you with some information about the asymmetry in this portrait.

My very dear friend does have facial asymmetries. I am by no means saying that I am a very good painter, but I did manage to depict her face the way it is.
Now, what does that mean? It means that I am very happy if you give me feedback on my rendering, colour scheme or anything else that I myself could have any impact on. But please respect that I do not wish any comment about this very lovely persons face, nor will I go into the reasons for the asymmetry. If anyone of you feels it is necessary to make nasty comments (I doubt it, since you’ve all been so lovely!) I will not hesitate to report this sort of behaviour.
I want you to understand that this face has always, without failure, been there for me and I trust you to treat her, my dearest friend, with kindness. Thank you!

I'm not an art expert but I've seen a picture of your friend on your homepage and for all I can say you did a perfect job in painting her!
Since she's always been there for you, I also like the philosophical meaning of the picture. Like a shining star in darkest night... Or like the stars that help the sailors on lost ships to find orientation, leading them back to their save harbor... There you have it, it's inspiring :)

Oh, and just btw, if you allow me: A little asymmetry can make a face more unique, more interesting. I personally find her's nice to look at. Remember: Beauty always lies in the eye of the beholder!

BugsAndBooks responds:

Heya there fellow inhabitant of the milky-way
Thank you so much for this endearing, lovely and thoughtful comment – it really made my night!

She truly has been a reliant, outstanding, celestial body, my rock (of plasma), the light that makes me smile even from a distance and the only person stubborn enough to push me forward even under cloudy skies. I can’t but wish and work to do the same for her.

You know, beauty is a strange thing … Not only is this volatile concept ever-changing, revolving around some evolutionary, beneficiary fix points, it is also overrated and underestimated at the same time. While we strive for a sense of beauty we often loose ourselves along the way, try to hold onto whatever we gravitate towards. And so often we forget to look around, see the beauty that is all around for us to admire.
I feel that the more I paint, draw, write, go for walks with my stupid doctor dog or learn about random things that make our natural world so fascinating, the more I stop caring about beauty and start to appreciate it, not for what we think it should be, but for what it is.
I guess that’s one of the pleasant side effects of growing up to be a wisearse – I suggest off label use! ;)

Anyways, thanks again and since you’re from the city of marvellous graffiti: Wir freuen uns, dich auf Clue Writing begrüssen zu dürfen und vergessen dich bei unseren Weltherrschaftplänen natürlich nicht ^^

Mit lieben Grüssen und grandiotastischen Wünschen
Rahel
