The Empress's New Hairstyle

Share

The Empress of Rome is checking out her Egyptian hairstylist's newest handiwork. Her Gallic slave-girl (the redheaded white chick to the right) seems to be impressed by it too.

As shown by numerous busts and sculptures, African hairstyles like cornrows and Afros were quite fashionable among women in ancient Greece and Rome. Would this count as good-hair syndrome in reverse, or an early example of cultural appropriation? Regardless, given how much contact seafaring Mediterranean peoples like the Greeks and Romans would have had with African nations to their south, it shouldn't surprise us that African cultural influences would rub onto them sooner or later.
